Book Description
The primary objective of this project is to use three-dimensional fuel shuffling in order to reduce the minimum peak radiation damage of ~550 dpa present Breed-and-Burn (B & B) fast nuclear reactor cores designs (they feature 2-D fuel shuffling) call for to as close as possible to the presently accepted value of 200 dpa thereby enabling earlier commercialization of B & B reactors which could make substantial contribution to energy sustainability and economic stability without need for fuel recycling. Another objective is increasing the average discharge burnup for the same peak discharge burnup thereby (1) increasing the fuel utilization of 2-D shuffled B & B reactors and (2) reducing the reprocessing capacity required to support a given capacity of FRs that are to recycle fuel.

Feasibility of Breed/Burn Fuel Cycles in Pebble Bed HTGR Reactors

Feasibility of Breed/Burn Fuel Cycles in Pebble Bed HTGR Reactors PDF Author: Timothy Storrs Jenks
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nuclear fuel elements
Languages : en
Pages : 181

Book Description
The feasibility of the breed/burn fuel cycle concept, originally proposed for Pu239/U FBR applications, has been evaluated for use in a U233/Th fueled pebble bed HTGR. Because of its excellent neutron economy, its versatility with respect to fueling strategies and the high fuel burnup achievable as well as the ability to approach continuous fueling operation, the pebble bed HTGR was judged to be the best suited, of reactors currently of commercial interest, for implementation of the breed/burn fuel cycle in a thermal/epithermal system. Successul stand-alone breed/burn operation could not be accomplished in U233/Th pebble bed HTGR systems for the ranges of compositions considered in this analysis: 110

Safety Issues Associated with Plutonium Involvement in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle

Safety Issues Associated with Plutonium Involvement in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle PDF Author: Theodore A. Parish

Book Description
The "VOLGA" conferences, hosted in odd-numbered years by the Department of Theoretical and Experimental Reactor Physics of the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI), are some of the most prestigious technical meetings held in Russia. Traditionally, these conferences present the opportunity for reactor physicists from around the world to gather at MEPhI's holiday camp on the banks of the Volga river (near Tver) to exchange ideas and explore innovative concepts related to nuclear power development. In 1997, NATO became involved in the "VOLGA" meetings for the first time by co-sponsoring "VOLGA97" as an advanced research workshop. This workshop broke with tradition a bit in that the venue was moved from MEPhI's holiday camp to a location nearer Moscow. The workshop program was effectively organized in order to cover a broad range of topics relating to the theme of the meeting. Generally, the papers concerned safety related questions associated with utilizing both weapons-grade and reactor-grade plutonium in the nuclear fuel cycle, including facility requirements, licensing issues, proliferation risks, and a variety of advanced concepts for alternative fuel cycles. The program contained a total of ninety-nine papers presented in five days of sessions.

Physics of High-Temperature Reactors

Physics of High-Temperature Reactors PDF Author: Luigi Massimo
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483280284
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
Physics of High-Temperature Reactors focuses on the physics of high-temperature reactors (HTRs) and covers topics ranging from fuel cycles and refueling strategies to neutron cross-sections, transport and diffusion theory, and resonance absorption. Spectrum calculations and cross-section averaging are also discussed, along with the temperature coefficient and reactor control. Comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins with a general description of the HTR core as well as its performance limitations. The next chapter deals with general considerations about HTR physics, including quantities to be determined and optimized in the design of nuclear reactors. Potential scattering and resonance reactions between neutrons and atomic nuclei are then considered, together with basic aspects of transport and diffusion theory. Subsequent chapters explore methods for solving the diffusion equation; slowing-down and neutron thermalization in graphite; HTR core design, fuel management, and cost calculations; and core dynamics and accident analysis. The final chapter describes the sequence of reactor design calculations. This monograph is written primarily for students of HTR physics who are preparing to enter the field as well as technologists of other disciplines who are working on the system.
