The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism, Vol II

The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism, Vol II PDF Author: Emeritus Professor of British and Irish History John Morrill
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198843437
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
The second volume of The Oxford History of British & Irish Catholicism traces the fortunes of Catholic communities in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland across a period of great uncertainty and change. From the outset of the Civil Wars in 1641 to the Jacobite rising of 1745, Catholics in the three kingdoms were varied in their responses to tumultuous events and tantalising opportunities. The competing forces of dynamism and conservatism within these communities saw them constantly seeking to re-situate or re-imagine themselves as their relationship to the state, to Protestantism, to continental Europe, as well as the wider world beyond, changed and evolved. Consciously transnational, the volume moves away from insular conceptualisations of Catholicism and instead stresses connections with the European continent and beyond. Early chapters give broad overviews of the experience of Catholics in the period, tracking key events and important developments from 1641 to 1745. Chapters then address specific aspects of Catholicism, including empire and overseas missions, missionary activity, devotion, spirituality, trade, material culture, music, and architecture, among others, revealing a complex, rich and varied history of Catholicism in the period.

The Right to be King

The Right to be King PDF Author: Howard Nenner
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349129526
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
This book examines the theory and practice of the English monarchical succession from the end of Elizabeth's reign to the accession of George I. Tracing the transition from an uncertain rule to a crown in the disposal of parliament, Nenner focuses on the major routes to the throne over the long seventeenth century: hereditary right, conquest, and election. It is a study of the competing principles of parliamentary sovereignty and fundamental law, and the ways in which tension between dynastic expectations and national needs were addressed and resolved.

Cervantes in Seventeenth-Century England

Cervantes in Seventeenth-Century England PDF Author: Dale B. J. Randall
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191561584
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 763

Book Description
Cervantes in Seventeenth-century England garners well over a thousand English references to Cervantes and his works, thus providing the fullest and most intriguing early English picture ever made of the writings of Spain's greatest writer. Besides references to the nineteen books of Cervantes's prose available to seventeenth-century English readers (including four little-known abridgments), this new volume includes entries by such notable writers as Ben Jonson, John Fletcher, William Wycherley, Aphra Behn, Thomas Hobbes, John Dryden, and John Locke, as well as many lesser-known and anonymous writers. A reader will find, among others, a counterfeiter, a midwife, an astrologer, a princess, a diarist, and a Harvard graduate. Altogether this broad range of writers, famed and forgotten alike, brings to light not only sectarian and political tensions of the day, but also glimpses of the arts-of weaving, singing, acting, engraving, and painting. Even dancing, for there was a dance called the "Sancho Panzo". The volume opens with a wide-ranging Introduction that among other things traces the English reception of both Cervantes's Don Quixote and his Novelas ejemplares, including the part they played in English drama. In the main body of the work, individual items are arranged chronologically by year and, within that framework, alphabetically by author, thus providing little-known seventeenth-century evidence regarding the nature and breadth of British interest in Cervantes in various decades. Thorough annotation helps readers to place individual entries in their historical, social, political, and in some instances religious contexts. The volume includes twenty-nine germane seventeenth-century pictures, an index of references to chapters in Don Quixote, and a full bibliography and index.

The Poems of John Dryden: 1686-1693

The Poems of John Dryden: 1686-1693 PDF Author: John Dryden
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
John Dryden was the greatest writer of Restoration England. These volumes are the third and fourth volumes in a five-volume edition of Dryden's poems and result from a complete reappraisal of the canon, text and context of his work. The modernised text has been prepared from a fresh examination of the early printed editions and takes account of the large number of manuscript copies which survived. These volumes cover the poems which Dryden published between 1686-1696. This was a decade which saw the completion of his work of Catholic apologetics, The Hindand the Panther, the major translations from Juvenal and Persius, and his return to the stage after the Revolution of 1688-9 deprived him of the laureateship. Throughout these two new volumes Dryden's language is glossed in unprecedented detail, revealing the poetic precision of his vocabulary. Together with volumes one and two they offer the most informative and accessible edition of Dryden's poetry and provide an invaluable resource for students of Restoratation culture.
