Titu Andreescu and Mark Saul

Titu Andreescu and Mark Saul PDF Author: Titu Andreescu
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1470434644
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 137

Book Description
This book starts with simple arithmetic inequalities and builds to sophisticated inequality results such as the Cauchy-Schwarz and Chebyshev inequalities. Nothing beyond high school algebra is required of the student. The exposition is lean. Most of the learning occurs as the student engages in the problems posed in each chapter. And the learning is not “linear”. The central topic of inequalities is linked to others in mathematics. Often these topics relate to much more than algebraic inequalities. There are also “secret” pathways through the book. Each chapter has a subtext, a theme which prepares the student for learning other mathematical topics, concepts, or habits of mind. For example, the early chapters on the arithmetic mean/geometric mean inequality show how very simple observations can be leveraged to yield useful and interesting results. Later chapters give examples of how one can generalize a mathematical statement. The chapter on the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality provides an introduction to vectors as mathematical objects. And there are many other secret pathways that the authors hope the reader will discover—and follow. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.

Thinking Visually

Thinking Visually PDF Author: Stephen K. Reed
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 113695029X
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
Language is a marvelous tool for communication, but it is greatly overrated as a tool for thought. This volume documents the many ways pictures, visual images, and spatial metaphors influence our thinking. It discusses both classic and recent research that support the view that visual thinking occurs not only where we expect to find it, but also where we do not. Much of comprehending language, for instance, depends on visual simulations of words or on spatial metaphors that provide a foundation for conceptual understanding. Thinking Visually supports comprehension by reducing jargon and by providing many illustrations, educational applications, and problems for readers to solve. It provides a broad overview of topics that range from the visual images formed by babies to acting classes designed for the elderly, from visual diagrams created by children to visual diagrams created by psychologists, from producing and manipulating images to viewing animations. The final chapters discuss examples of instructional software and argue that the lack of such software in classrooms undermines the opportunity to develop visual thinking. The book includes the Animation TutorTM downloadable resources to illustrate the application of research on visual thinking to improve mathematical reasoning.

Fundamental Concepts in Electrical and Computer Engineering with Practical Design Problems

Fundamental Concepts in Electrical and Computer Engineering with Practical Design Problems PDF Author: Reza Adhami
Publisher: Universal-Publishers
ISBN: 1581129718
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 736

Book Description
In many cases, the beginning engineering student is thrown into upper-level engineering courses without an adequate introduction to the basic material. This, at best, causes undue stress on the student as they feel unprepared when faced with unfamiliar material, and at worst, results in students dropping out of the program or changing majors when they discover that their chosen field of engineering is not what they thought it was. The purpose of this text is to introduce the student to a general cross-section of the field of electrical and computer engineering. The text is aimed at incoming freshmen, and as such, assumes that the reader has a limited to nonexistent background in electrical engineering and knowledge of no more than pre-calculus in the field of mathematics. By exposing students to these fields at an introductory level, early in their studies, they will have both a better idea of what to expect in later classes and a good foundation of knowledge upon which to build.

Optimization and Artificial Intelligence in Civil and Structural Engineering

Optimization and Artificial Intelligence in Civil and Structural Engineering PDF Author: B.H. Topping
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401724903
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 656

Book Description
This volume and its companion volume includes the edited versions of the principal lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. The Institute was held in the Department of Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from June 25th to July 6th 1989 and was attended by eighty participants from Universities and Research Institutes around the world. A number of practising civil and structural engineers also attended. The lectures and papers have been divided into two volumes to reflect the dual themes of the Institute namely Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. Planning for this ASI commenced in late 1986 when Andrew Templeman and I discussed developments in the use of the systems approach in civil engineering. A little later it became clear that much of this approach could be realised through the use of knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence techniques. Both Don Grierson and John Gero indicated at an early stage how important it would be to include knowledge-based systems within the scope of the Institute. The title of the Institute could have been: 'Civil Engineering Systems' as this would have reflected the range of systems applications to civil engineering problems considered by the Institute. These volumes therefore reflect the full range of these problems including: structural analysis and design; water resources engineering; geotechnical engineering; transportation and environmental engineering.

Jones 53 New Traditional Canonical Holmes Adventures Collected in Three Companion Volumes Throughout the original Holmes Canon, there were hints and teases of other intriguing cases - The Tarleton Murders . . . The Grice-Paterson Curse . . . The Abernetty Tragedy. Watson mentions over one-hundred-and-twenty of these, which have collectively come to be known as The Untold Cases. Now, once again MX Publishing brings us fifty-three of these adventures in three simultaneously published volumes, with all royalties going to support the Undershaw school for special needs children, located at one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's former homes. "Somewhere in the vaults of the bank of Cox and Co., at Charing Cross, there is a travel-worn and battered tin dispatch box with my name, John H. Watson, M.D., Late Indian Army, painted upon the lid. It is crammed with papers, nearly all of which are records of cases to illustrate the curious problems which Mr. Sherlock Holmes had at various times to examine . . . ." - Dr. John H. Watson So wrote Dr. Watson in "The Problem of Thor Bridge" - and ever since, Sherlockians have been seeking to know more about these tales from the legendary Tin Dispatch Box. While Watson's original Literary Agent only edited the pitifully few sixty stories that make up the original Canon, there have since been literally thousands of traditional adventures about the true Sherlock Holmes - and yet there will never be enough! In 2018, MX Publishing presented Parts XI and XII of this acclaimed and ongoing series, Some Untold Cases, and then in 2020, Parts XXII, XXIII, and XXIV returned to that theme with Some More Untold Cases. Now that concept is revisited with more Sherlock Holmes adventures that further explore those many tantalizing references to some of Holmes's other Untold Cases, as mentioned in The Canon. Join us as we return to Baker Street and discover more authentic adventures of Sherlock Holmes, described by the estimable Dr. Watson as "the best and wisest . . . whom I have ever known."
