Mechanics of Coastal Sediment Transport

Mechanics of Coastal Sediment Transport PDF Author: J?rgen Freds?e
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789810208400
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
This book treats the subject of sediment transport in the marine environment, covering transport of non-cohesive sediment by waves and current in- and outside the surf zone. It can be read independently, but a background in hydraulics and basic wave mechanics is required. It is intended for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. The primary aim of the book is to describe the physical processes of sediment transport and how to represent them in mathematical models. It does not present a large number of different formulae for the sediment transport rates under various conditions. The book can be divided in two main parts; in the first, the relevant hydrodynamic theory is described; in the second, sediment transport and morphological development are treated. The hydrodynamic part contains a review of elementary theory for water waves, chapters on the turbulent wave boundary layer and the turbulent interaction between waves and currents, and finally, surf zone hydrodynamics and wave driven currents. The part on sediment transport introduces the basic concepts (critical bed shear stress, bed load, suspended load and sheet layer, near-bed concentration, effect of sloping bed); it treats suspended sediment in waves and current and in the surf zone, and current and wave-generated bed forms. Finally, the modelling of cross-shore and long-shore sediment transport is described together with the development, of coastal profiles and coastlines.

Sediment Transport and Morphodynamics Modelling for Coasts and Shallow Environments

Sediment Transport and Morphodynamics Modelling for Coasts and Shallow Environments PDF Author: Vanesa Magar
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1498753485
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 231

Book Description
This reference for engineers, and graduate students covers sediment transport and morphodynamics modelling in nearshore environments. It presents the fundamentals required for understanding the physics and for setting up numerical models. This book covers hydrodynamics of estuarine and coastal environments, properties of seafloor and estuarine composition, and hydroenvironmental interactions; emphasising the inter-relations of small- and large-scale processes, and short- and large-evolution timescales. The focus is, principally, on the application of shallow-water theory, but some surface wave models, and coupling of shallow-water models with surface waves is also discussed to some extent. The guidance on running regional models and the case studies presented are directed to managed realignment, coastal protection, climate change impacts, and offshore renewables. Key features: Gives a balanced review of this rich interdisciplinary area Bridges practical engineering and research Offers both large- and small-scale application Suits graduate students and researchers as well as consulting engineers Vanesa Magar is a senior researcher and associate professor at the Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) in Baja California, Mexico. She was formerly a researcher and then a lecturer at Plymouth University, UK.

Turbulence-resolving Numerical Investigations of Coastal Bottom Boundary Layer and Fine Sediment Transport

Turbulence-resolving Numerical Investigations of Coastal Bottom Boundary Layer and Fine Sediment Transport PDF Author: Liangyi Yue

Book Description
The bottom boundary layer in coastal ocean is of intrinsic scientific importance in many disciplines, serving as the near-bed passage where many benthic transport processes occur and it is a vital bridge connecting the wave propagation, currents and upper ocean processes with the seafloor. The present work focuses on the fluid dynamics in coastal bottom boundary layer (CBBL) and the associated sediment transport process using the technique of turbulence-resolving numerical simulation (TRNS). Particularly, we are interested in the entrainment, suspension and transport of fine sediment in the wave bottom boundary layer (WBBL) driven by surface gravity waves.

Turbulent coherent structures, Secondary currents and Sediment ridges

Turbulent coherent structures, Secondary currents and Sediment ridges PDF Author: Scherer, Markus Maximilian
Publisher: KIT Scientific Publishing
ISBN: 3731513188
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
The origin of secondary currents and subaqueous sediment patterns in natural rivers is analysed from first principles. For this purpose, simulations of sediment transport in canonical turbulent open channel flows are performed using a numerical technique that resolves all relevant flow scales and the dynamics of the individual sand grains. The high-fidelity datasets reveal the fundamental importance of individual coherent structures for the development of sediment patterns and secondary flows.

Shallow Flows

Shallow Flows PDF Author: Gerhard H. Jirka
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1135288429
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 684

Book Description
This text presents the key findings of the International Symposium held in Delft in 2003, which explored the process of shallow flows. Shallow flows are found in lowland rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and in density-stratified atmospheres, and may be observed in puddles, as in oceans. They impact on the life and work of a wide variety of readers, who are here provided with a clear overview of the subject. Shallow flows are intrinsically turbulent. On one hand, there are strongly three-dimensional, small-scale turbulent motions and on the other hand, large-scale quasi-two-dimensional turbulence. This book explains and examines these differences and their effects with sections on transport processes in shallow flows; shallow jets, wakes and mixing layers; stratified and rotating flows in ocean and atmosphere; river and channel flows; and numerical modelling and turbulence closure techniques. The reader is provided with the pick of current studies and a fresh approach to the subject, with expert examination of a fascinating and crucial phenomenon of our world's water systems.

Coastal Bottom Boundary Layers and Sediment Transport

Coastal Bottom Boundary Layers and Sediment Transport PDF Author: Peter Nielsen
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789810204730
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
This book is intended as a useful handbook for professionals and researchers in the areas of Physical Oceanography, Marine Geology, Coastal Geomorphology and Coastal Engineering and as a text for graduate students in these fields. With its emphasis on boundary layer flow and basic sediment transport modelling, it is meant to help fill the gap between general hydrodynamic texts and descriptive texts on marine and coastal sedimentary processes. The book commences with a review of coastal bottom boundary layer flows including the boundary layer interaction between waves and steady currents. The concept of eddy viscosity for these flows is discussed in depth because of its relation to sediment diffusivity. The quasi-steady processes of sediment transport over flat beds are discussed. Small scale coastal bedforms and the corresponding hydraulic roughness are described. The motion of suspended sand particles is studied in detail with emphasis on the possible suspension maintaining mechanisms in coastal flows. Sediment pickup functions are provided for unsteady flows. A new combined convection-diffusion model is provided for suspended sediment distributions. Different methods of sediment transport model building are presented together with some classical models.
