Book Description
We present results of theoretical nuclear structure model calculations for the gamma-ray laser candidate nucleus 186Re proposed by Collins. Our calculations of this odd-odd transitional nucleus are based on an axially-asymmetric (particle plus triaxial rotor) model for constructing the orbitals of the odd nucleons that couple under the influence of the residual neutron-proton interaction. We include pairing correlations in the determination of these orbitals by using the BCS approximation with newly determined pairing strengths. The matrix elements of the residual neutron-proton interaction are obtained using phenomenological spin-dependent delta function potentials of both surface and volume forms. We examine the sensitivity of the calculated low-excitation level structure of 186Re to the strength of these potentials. Calculated energy levels of 186Re will be presented and compared with experiment. The impact of our results on the proposed use of 186Re as a gamma-ray laser will be discussed. In addition, based upon these and other model calculations to be described, we assess the level of effort necessary in a full-scale theoretical search for a viable candidate nucleus for a gamma-ray laser. 17 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs.

Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons

Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons PDF Author: J. Ero
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461344999
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
The International Conference on "Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons" or ganized in Budapest between 31st July and 5th August. 1972. was the successor of a meeting held seven years ago in Antwerp. The close links between the two conferences were revealed not in name alone but. more importantly. in the choice of subjects discussed. As in Antwerp. the lectures and contributions to the Budapest Conference could be grouped under the following five main headings: nuclear spectroscopy; the optical model; the statistical model and intermediate structures; the mechanism of neutron capture and non-statistical effects; and, finally. miscellaneous special topics. The invited papers on the one hand summarizing recent developments and current thinking in one of the above main topics. and the other surveying the most important results of the contributed papers submitted to the Conference. were presented on the plenary sessions. Most of the contributed papers were read in full on three parallel sessions. This volume contains the complete text of all the lectures delivered in the plenary sessions and abstracts of the contributed papers. The invited talks were presented at the Conference in a rather random order because of technical reasons, it seemed. however, more sensible to change their order according to their subjects and to print them grouped under the above main headings. Further more we divided the Proceedings into two main parts, the first containing only the lectures of summarizing character. the second including the abstracts of the contributions together with the surveying talks.

Nuclear Structure from a Simple Perspective

Nuclear Structure from a Simple Perspective PDF Author: R. F. Casten
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780195364415
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
This book provides a useful survey and assessment of the study of low-energy collective and single particle excitations of medium and heavy nuclei. An ideal resource for graduate students, the book covers both experimental and theoretical perspectives. The author's simple intuitive approach will help the reader to understand the empirical systematics as well as detailed model calculations, without recourse to complex--and often--confusing formalism.

Fission and Properties of Neutron-Rich Nuclei - Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference

Fission and Properties of Neutron-Rich Nuclei - Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference PDF Author:
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812833439
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 769

Book Description
These proceedings are the fourth in the series of International Conferences covering fission and properties of neutron-rich nuclei, which are at the forefront of nuclear structure research. The time interval of 5 years between each conference allows for significant new results to be achieved. Recently, world leaders in theory and experiments in research and the development of new facilities for research presented their latest results in areas such as synthesis of superheavy elements, new facilities for and recent results with radioactive ion beams, structure of neutron-rich nuclei, nuclear fission process, fission yields and nuclear astrophysics. This book is a major source of the latest research in these areas and plans for the future. The conference brought together a unique group of over 100 speakers including the directors of the major nuclear laboratories in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia and the US along with leading research scientists from around the world.

Nuclear Structure Studies of 159Er Up to High Spin

Nuclear Structure Studies of 159Er Up to High Spin PDF Author: Mohammed Mohammed Mustafa
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
In the current work a detailed spectroscopic investigations of the gamma-decays from the excited states of the rare-earth nucleus 159Er has been performed to study the structural properties up to possible ultrahigh spins. The nucleus of 159Er had been populated by the reaction 116Cd(48Ca,5n ) at beam energy of 215-MeV in an experiment at Argonne National Laboratory using the Gammashphere array. Following a hypercube analysis of the collected data, new rotational bands were observed and the previously reported bands were extended up to possible spin through observation of new gamma-ray transitions in coincidence with the existing sequences. Possible angular intensity-ratio, B(M1)/B(E2)-ratios, measurements have been performed to confirm the nature of previously observed transitions and to assign multipolarites of the new ones. The band structures are discussed within the framework of cranked shell model calculations, revealing a diverse range of quasiparticle configurations. At spins of around 50 ̄h, there is evidence for a change from dominant prolate collective motion in the yrast band and its signature partner to oblate non-collective structures via the mechanism of band termination. A possible strongly deformed triaxial band occurs at these high spins, which indicate collectivity beyond 50 ̄h. The high-spin structures of data are interpreted within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

Nuclear Structure Far from Stability

Nuclear Structure Far from Stability PDF Author: International School of Physics Enrico Fermi
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781607503491
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 591

Book Description
The aim of this publication is to give an account of recent advances and new perspectives in the study of nuclei far from stability both from the experimental and the theoretical points of view. Experimental studies of exotic nuclei are currently being performed in several laboratories and new facilities with high-intensity beams are either just completed, or approved and under construction or in their planning stages. The bulk of the contributions in this book is devoted to nuclear structure models and their derivation from the basic nucleon-nucleon interaction. Three models are extensively discussed: the shell model, the interacting boson model and the cluster model. In recent years, considerable advance has been made in ab initio theories of nuclei, especially of light nuclei.
