Book Description
Excerpt from A Monograph of the Mycetozoa: A Descriptive Catalogue of the Species in the Herbarium of the British Museum The widespread interest aroused in the study of the Mycetozoa by the publication of Mr. Lister's work has found expression in a large influx of material, the study of which has led to the recognition of new genera and species, and an extension of our knowledge of the geographical distribution of known forms; and has in some instances rendered necessary a re-consideration of views previously held. These considerations, together with the revision of the nomenclature in conformity with the International Rules, practically necessitated re-writing the book when the need arose for a new edition. In the preparation of this edition Miss Lister has continued the work in which she as for so long and so intimately associated with her father, and for which she is so eminently well equipped. A special feature of the second edition is the replacement of the collotype plates by a new and more complete series. A large proportion have been reproduced by the three-colour process, and greater justice has thus been done to the original drawings by Mr. and Miss Lister, than was possible by the method of reproduction formerly employed; that so large a proportion are reproduced in colour is due to Miss Lister's generosity. A bibliography has been added, and also a short glossary which supplements the explanation of terms given in the Introduction. In order to make the National Collection as complete as possible, Miss Lister is generously presenting a large series of specimens to the Museum.
