Optical Turbulence
Author: Elena Masciadri
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1848164858
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 415
Book Description
This book collects most of the talks and poster presentations presented at the "Optical Turbulence ? Astronomy meets Meteorology" international conference held on 15?18 September, 2008 at Nymphes Bay, Alghero, Sardinia, Italy. The meeting aimed to deal with one of the major causes of wavefront perturbations limiting the astronomical high-angular-resolution observations from the ground. The uniqueness of this meeting has been the effort to attack this topic in a synergic and multidisciplinary approach promoting constructive discussions between the actors of this science ? the astronomers, meteorologists, physicists of the atmosphere and the experts in adaptive optics and interferometry techniques whose main goal is to correct, in real-time, the wavefront perturbations induced by atmospheric turbulence to restore at the telescope foci the best available image quality.

Thermosonde C2n Measurements in Hawaii -- August 1982
Author: James H. Brown
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Atmosphere, Upper
Languages : en
Pages : 44
Book Description
Eight AFGL thermosondes were flown from Mt. Haleakala, Hawaii to measure atmospheric turbulence in the form of the optical refractive index structure constant C sub n squared. Temperature and relative humidity comparisons between the AFGL instruments and standard GMD rawinsondes are presented. The AFGL instruments obtain greater temperature and humidity spatial resolution and consequently show finer structure in the profiles. A diurnal shift in the C sub n squared profile is noted as well as a tropopause enhancement. Coherence scales are calculated from the thermosonde data.

Thermosonde and UHF Radar Measurements of C2n at Westford, Massachusetts -- July 1981
Author: James H. Brown
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Atmospheric turbulence
Languages : en
Pages : 62
Book Description
Five different instruments were used in coordinated multiple experiments to measure atmospheric turbulence. C sub n squared, the optical refractive structure constant, was measured by thermosondes, UHF radar, stellar scintillometer, and aircraft mounted micro-thermal probes. Presented here are the results of 19 rawinsode flights. Also comparisons of eight thermosonde/radar profiles, one radar, scintillometer, thermosonode profile, and several aircraft profiles are presented. For the scales discussed here, good agreement is shown between radar, thermosonode, and scintillometer data. Worse agreement is obtained from aircraft measurements. A diurnal shift in the C2 profile is noted but no tropopause enhancement is found.
