Book Description
Excerpt from A Method for Testing Gas Appliances to Determine Their Their Safety From Producing Carbon Monoxide For reasons which will be pointed out in this paper the problem of providing safe appliances is one which can not well be solved by merely local action. As this fact became apparent, plans were made for Cooperation among those most interested, especially the American Gas Association, the Natural Gas Association of America, and the Government bureaus, with the result that an appliance testing labora tory is now being established at Cleveland, Ohio, by the American Gas Association. This laboratory is intended to serve both the natural gas and the manufactured gas industries. To the Bureau of Standards has been assigned the primary responsibility for the basic researches necessary on the utilization of gas, especially upon the development of test methods. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods which have been thus far developed to deter mine the margin of safety of an appliance used with a certain gas supply. Book Description
Excerpt from Standard Methods of Gas Testing The need for an American publication which can be accepted as a standard guide to the methods of testing gas distributed for illuminating and heating purposes, has been indicated by the inquiries which are ire quently addressed to the Bureau of Standards. This circular has been prepared with the hope of meeting this need. Although the circular is somewhat Similar to the English publication, entitled Notification of the Gas Referees (london), it is radically different in one important respect. The latter publication, which is published primarily for London, where the referees have authority to prescribe the methods of testing, gives only one method for each test, and its directions are intended to be followed exactly. In the present circular, no attempt is made to fix upon a single method to be used in every case, for it is not believed that uniformity of method is always necessary in order that the results of a test be considered standard. However, satisfactory results may be expected only if such methods are used as have been critically examined by experienced workers and found to be trustworthy. It will be the function of this and of later editions of this circular to collect and summarize the experience of gas chemists and inspectors in order to assist them in Obtaining satisfactory results. The methods included in this circular are intended primarily for use in official testing and in works laboratories which are checked by city or State inspectors. In each case as much freedom in choice Of method is allowed as seems permissible; but the simplest procedure or apparatus with which satis factory results can be had is given preference. The discussion is so arranged that an inexperienced man may utilize the information, but exactness of description has not been sacrificed in the effort to simplify the directions.
