Book Description
Reflections by Maryknoll missioners relate the Sunday Gospel readings to the world of the poor and marginalized. Maryknoll missioners bring a special perspective to their reading of the Gospels. From their immersion among the poor in many cultures around the world they witness daily stories of love, faith, and hope that open new angles on Jesus' message and its meaning for our world. In this book, which follows the Sunday readings for the liturgical year, Maryknoll sisters, priests, brothers, and lay missioners share personal reflections on the Gospel in light of their mission experience. From a village in Tanzania, to a refugee camp in Central America, to an orphanage in Jamaica, stories of compassion, generosity, and forgiveness illuminate the scriptural texts, while also enlarging our solidarity with the human family. The experience of these missioners has enriched their own faith. Reading their reflections will enrich your own.

My Words Will Not Pass Away

My Words Will Not Pass Away PDF Author: Martin Hogan
Publisher: Messenger Publications
ISBN: 1788125037
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away’ (Luke 21:33) At the weekday Eucharist we read from sections of all four gospels in the course of the liturgical year. The reflections in this book are based predominantly on the gospel readings for the weekdays of the coming liturgical year, 2021/22, with occasional references to the first reading. They follow the sequence of the weeks of the calendar year, beginning on the 29th November, Monday of the first week of Advent. In the course of the liturgical year, the gospel readings present us with a significant selection of the words and deeds of Jesus from all four gospels. In and through these gospel readings we encounter the living word of the risen Lord to his church. There is rich fare here to nourish our faith life and to help us to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord. These short reflections attempt to listen to the Scripture passages on their own terms, while showing how they can continue to speak to our church and our world today. Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. It is hoped that these reflections will serve as a help to prayer for people of faith. They may also be of service to priests who seek to offer a short reflection on the gospel reading of the day to their parishioners. In parishes where, from time to time, there is a Liturgy of the Word in place of Mass, the Minister of the Word might read the corresponding reflection after the gospel reading. On most week days, the same readings are proclaimed in the church throughout the world in the setting of the Eucharist. To read and reflect upon the readings for the weekdays of the liturgical year is to go on a spiritual journey with the universal church.

The Liturgical Year

The Liturgical Year PDF Author: Adrien Nocent
Publisher: Liturgical Press
ISBN: 0814635962
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
When Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year was published in the 1970s, it was the very first comprehensive commentary on the three-year lectionary in relation to the Sacramentary/Missal as these were revised following the Second Vatican Council. Expressed on nearly every page was Nocent's conviction that the liturgy and the Word of God proclaimed within it have something important to say to real people of every culture and time. He constantly returns to the question: What does this passage have to say to us today? Now this extraordinary work of applied, postconciliar liturgical scholarship has been emended and annotated by one of today's leading liturgical scholars. Paul Turner has provided many helpful explanatory notes on history, culture, language, and, of course, liturgy. He has also updated the liturgical texts to conform to The Roman Missal, Third Edition. The result is a resource that promises to enrich and inspire a new generation of presiders, preachers, liturgy planners, and students. On the fiftieth anniversary of Vatican II's Sacrosanctum Concilium, encounter the vibrant scholarship and pastoral wisdom of Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year again or for the first time! Volume 3 covers all of the Sundays of Ordinary Time.

Like a Hammer Shattering Rock

Like a Hammer Shattering Rock PDF Author: Megan McKenna
Publisher: Image
ISBN: 0770437842
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Renowned Catholic author Megan McKenna celebrates her 50th book with a controversial interpretation of the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John and what they mean for the Church and society today. In many ways, modern audiences have become so familiar with the gospels that we've stopped listening and integreting their wisdom into our everyday lives. Acclaimed author Megan McKenna explores the messages of the four gospels in the context of daily life when they were originally written and interprets their meaning for our modern world. While some argue for the development of new gospels for the 21st century, McKenna argues that we haven't paid due attention to the ones we already have; in many cases, we've ignored sections of these teachings entirely and twisted their meaning to suit our own agendas. McKenna breaks it down, gospel by gospel, and shows us how the lessons of Jesus's apostles continue to resonate.
