Book Description
Excerpt from A Little Tour in America "Hope told a flattering tale" that, having written a prefatory chapter to this book, no further prologue would be required; but I have just received an intimation from headquarters: "No Preface. Please send at once." I hate Prefaces. The writer always seems to magnify or to minimize his merits; and the reader resents his self-conceit, or infers from his humility "that his deserts are small." Who cares to know what an author thinks about himself or his books? The fond mother does not love her small boy the less because he has an appalling squint; and she describes as "a lovely auburn" his hair of brilliant red. And why does he, the author, always assure us that he has done his best? Of course he has. He knows that the critic is waiting to crown him with laurel or with foolscap, that the public are waiting to nod in approbation or in slumber, and that the publisher is waiting to send him a condolence or a cheque. They do not desire information about his modus operandi, they want to see the opus. They are not anxious to be introduced to the cook, but to taste his dishes; and no ornamental Menu nor devout Grace before Meals will alter the organization of their palates or improve the flavour of their food. Let us omit the Preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Conversational Tour in America I put it all down to being deprived of my golf during autumn holidays. When I say "deprived," let me not be misunderstood: I acknowledge that there was no compulsion, not even much undue influence brought to bear upon me. Phyllis, it is true, intimated that she had had enough of Westerfield, but I had long expected her to say so, for we had visited that very uninteresting spot five or six years in succession, and, except bathing and sitting on the sands and occasional conversations with acquaintances whom she picked up at the hotel, there was nothing in the place for a grown and non-golfing woman to do. First Impressions of America (Classic Reprint)

First Impressions of America (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Walter R. Hadwen
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331261612
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
Excerpt from First Impressions of America Having been invited in the Spring of 1921 to undertake a lecturing tour in the United States of America, I seized the opportunity of jotting down as I went along my impressions of scenery, places with historical interest, and manners and customs of the people which specially appealed to me, and these impressions were contributed in the form of articles to the Gloucester Citizen. It is because so many readers have told me that those articles gave them a better idea of the States than anything they had read before, that I ventured, in response to many requests, to produce them in book form. This book is not offered to the travelled citizen of the world, but rather to the rank and file of Britishers - dwellers in small streets and rural retreats, and inhabitants of provincial towns - who know next to nothing of the United States and whose ignorance is not dissipated after they have read many books, the writers of which have assumed their knowledge of details that are usually assimilated by the traveller alone. A Tour in the United States (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Archibald Prentice
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Book Description
Excerpt from A Tour in the United States It: had been an arrangement between Mr. John Brooks and myself, after the termination of the long struggle for free trade in corn, in which, as members of the Council of the anti-corn-law League, from its commencement to its close, we had both taken an active, and rather an exhaust ing part, that we should seek some relaxation in a journey somewhere; and a pretty long voyage, for the benefit of his health, having been recommended to Mr. Brooks, we resolved to see the magnificent scenery of the United States, and to observe the working of democratic institutions in that great republic. I had long desired to visit America in pre ference to the old states of continental Europe, not only because I had relatives there, but that I regarded the country as destined to contain the most numerous branch of the anglo-saxon family; and my pursuits in life had given me more interest in the prospects of mankind than in their past history. A brief tour needs but a brief record. In the following pages little more is intended than to convey the impressions made upon the eye and mind of a hasty passenger through a country of much present beauty and great future.
