Down in the Southwest, the Indian still lives, in places, in his primitive state. There, too, is the wily Mexican, or Spaniard, as he is called, and there, too, we shall find the Chinaman and the Jap, though these are more numerous in the extreme West. Then, too, all the wild life of the plains is to be seen on this Little Journey, and the very path of the railway is ever through scenes that teem with historical legend. Everything west of the Mississippi and south of a line drawn, say, east and west through San Francisco, may be termed the Southwest.
