WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED... If Lewis Carroll had proclaimed the reality of Alice's Wonderland? What if he had gathered a following & launched an expedition? THE TRUE STORY OF A JOURNEY TO A FANTASTIC LAND IT WAS THE EARLY 1960s. The place, a far-off corner of the Himalayas long fabled in Tibetan tradition to be hiding a valley of immortality among its peaks and glaciers--a real-life Shangri-La. They waited generations for the prophesied lama to come, the one with the secret knowledge of how to 'open' the Hidden Land. Then, one day, he came. His name was Tulshuk Lingpa. THIS BOOK TELLS THE TRUE STORY of this charismatic visionary lama and his remarkable expedition. Against the wishes of the kings of both Sikkim and Nepal, he and over three hundred followers ventured up the snowy slopes of the third highest mountain of the planet. Their aim: to open a crack in the very fabric of reality and go to a land we would all wish to inhabit if it were only there--a land of peace and concord. FORTY YEARS LATER, the author spends over five years tracking down the surviving members of this extraordinary expedition. He deftly weaves their stories together with humor, wisdom, and scholarly research into Tibetan traditions of Hidden Lands, all the while reflecting on what this means for the rest of us. "LIKE NO OTHER BOOK I have ever read...a riveting tale of adventure...honest to the real spirit of Tibet...both unique and intriguing...an engrossing read. Highly recommended." JETSUNMA TENZIN PALMO, from the Foreword From Tulshuk Lingpa's Guidebook to the Hidden Land: "DON'T LISTEN TO ANYBODY. Decide by yourself and practise madness. Develop courage for the benefit of all sentient beings. Then you will automatically be free from the knot of attachment. Then you will continually have the confidence of fearlessness and you can then try to open the Great Door of the Hidden Place." Welcome to Florida (WTF) - Our Journey to Paradise

Welcome to Florida (WTF) - Our Journey to Paradise PDF Author: Greg Winkler

ISBN: 9781640968752
Category : Humor

Pages : 116

Book Description
Welcome to Florida. If only I had a sand dollar for every time an odd occurrence was explained away with the unique expression: Welcome to Florida. My wife, Vikki, and I decided to leave our home state of Wisconsin and follow our dream with a move to paradise, known to us as Florida. We had vacationed in the Sunshine State many times, and the sun and the sand had always called our names, so we finally followed the calling and landed in the town of Punta Gorda, just north of Fort Myers on the Gulf side of the state. For the most part, paradise was just as we'd imagined, but as we settled into our new home, we experienced many quirky and previously unknown facts of life. Turns out, Florida is not all Mickey Mouse and beaches. Several of our neighbors and colleagues are transplants themselves, experiencing many of the same abnormalities on their own when making the move south. As we shared our anecdotal stories with our now fellow Floridians, we were frequently met with that simple phrase in response: Welcome to Florida. I began to jot down these stories so that we might have more to offer future Floridians when they shared their tales with us. As I abbreviated the phrase "Welcome to Florida," I realized quickly that the acronym was WTF! It seemed appropriate that the common slang for "What the f----!" shared an abbreviation with the three words we heard so often. As you read about our Welcome to Florida journey, you too might find yourself shaking your head and saying, "WTF!"

Bringing Progress to Paradise

Bringing Progress to Paradise PDF Author: Jeff Rasley
Publisher: Conari Press
ISBN: 1609252896
Category : Travel

Pages : 258

Book Description
What does it mean to bring progress—schools, electricity, roads, running water—to paradise? Can our consumer culture and desire to “do good” really be good for a community that has survived contentedly for centuries without us? In October 2008, climbing expedition leader and attorney, Jeffrey Rasley, led a trek to a village in a remote valley in the Solu region of Nepal named Basa. His group of three adventurers was only the third group of white people ever seen in this village of subsistence farmers. What he found was a people thoroughly unaffected by Western consumer-culture values. They had no running water, electricity, or anything that moves on wheels. Each family lived in a beautiful, hand-chiseled stone house with a flower garden. Beyond what they already had, it seemed all they wanted was education for the children. He helped them finish a school building already in progress, and then they asked for help getting electricity to their village. Bringing Progress to Paradise describes Rasley’s transformation from adventurer to committed philanthropist. We are attracted to the simpler way of life in these communities, and we are changed by our experience of it. They are attracted to us, because we bring economic benefits. Bringing Progress to Paradise offers Rasley’s critical reflection on the tangled relationship between tourists and locals in “exotic” locales and the effect of Western values on some of the most remote locations on earth.

This Is Paradise

This Is Paradise PDF Author: Kristiana Kahakauwila
Publisher: Hogarth
ISBN: 0770436250
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Elegant, brutal, and profound—this magnificent debut captures the grit and glory of modern Hawai'i with breathtaking force and accuracy. In a stunning collection that announces the arrival of an incredible talent, Kristiana Kahakauwila travels the islands of Hawai'i, making the fabled place her own. Exploring the deep tensions between local and tourist, tradition and expectation, façade and authentic self, This Is Paradise provides an unforgettable portrait of life as it’s truly being lived on Maui, Oahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island. In the gut-punch of “Wanle,” a beautiful and tough young woman wants nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps as a legendary cockfighter. With striking versatility, the title story employs a chorus of voices—the women of Waikiki—to tell the tale of a young tourist drawn to the darker side of the city’s nightlife. “The Old Paniolo Way” limns the difficult nature of legacy and inheritance when a patriarch tries to settle the affairs of his farm before his death. Exquisitely written and bursting with sharply observed detail, Kahakauwila’s stories remind us of the powerful desire to belong, to put down roots, and to have a place to call home.

Paradise Travel

Paradise Travel PDF Author: Jorge Franco
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN: 1429935626
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
From one of Colombia's leading novelists, a tragicomic story of unrequited love and a view of New York through the wide eyes of an illegal immigrant Paradise Travel recounts the adventures of Marlon Cruz, a naïve young man from Medellín, Colombia, who agrees to accompany the beautiful, ambitious woman he loves to New York. On their first night in Queens, Marlon and Reina lose each other, thus initiating Marlon's descent into the underbelly of our country. A leader of the gritty-realist movement known as McOndo, Jorge Franco evokes the follies and pains of unrequited love at the same time that he explores deeper inequalities between North and South America. Moving between lower-middle-class Colombia and immigrant New York (specifically, the Jackson Heights neighborhood seen recently in the movie Maria Full of Grace), Paradise Travel is an exciting work from a rising star, celebrated by Gabriel García Márquez as "one of those to whom I should like to pass the torch" of Colombian fiction. Praise for Rosario Tijeras: "Latin America's McOndo literary movement drags the butterflies of magical realism into Burger King. With Jorge Franco's narco-saga Rosario Tijeras, it may have found its first masterpiece." —Rachel Aviv, Salon
