A brief study was made of a meat-irradiation facility consisting of an aqueous homogeneous reactor and a source utilizing fission-product gases and their daughter products. It was estimated that a reactor power level of 15 Mw would be required to obtain a source that would irradiate 6 in. x 16 in. x 20 in. boxes of meat to a dose of 2 x 10 rep in 30 min and at a rate of 2800 lb/hr. Approximately 1/4% of the reactor power would be emitted as energy of gamma photons in the source. Based on experience with the Homogeneous Reactor Test, it is believed that the entire facility would cost about $5.5 million.
