Book Description
A new information and communication technology (ICT) has been deployed in the battle against Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that is both progressive and disabling with significant impact on quality of life. This book explains the experience following from the achieved results in the REMPARK project on Parkinson’s disease management up to the launch of a new medical product to the European market, STAT-ONTM. The new medical device, STAT-ONTM is a real Holter for the motor symptoms associated to PD. It provides objective information about the severity and distribution of PD motor symptoms and their fluctuations in daily life, allowing for an unbiased and correct monitoring of the patient. This real-time remote monitoring solution gives additional information to neurologists, opening up new possibilities for more effective treatment, more accurate control in clinical trials, and for early detection of motor complications. The number of PD patients is continuously rising, adding complexity, especially in the management at the level of public health. It is an incurable disease, with a symptomatic treatment that tries to alleviate the associated symptoms through a correct adjustment of the medication. For this reason, it is also very important to be aware of changes in the manifestation of the symptoms, which may indicate the need for an adjustment or even a change in the therapy strategy. The intensive complementary use of STAT-ONTM by neurologists, health professionals and researchers, will increase the independence and quality of life of patients, improving their disease management, and contributing to a deeper understanding of the nature of the disease.

Handbook of Digital Technologies in Movement Disorders PDF Author: Roongroj Bhidayasiri
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323994954
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
Over the past few years, there have been fundamental changes in the diagnosing and treating patients with chronic diseases, significantly affecting management of neurological movement disorders. In addition, the health and fitness sector developed several devices to better classify, track, and potentially treat chronic diseases. Both handling and interpreting these large datasets has been revolutionized, by machine and deep learning approaches, leading to new and more effective therapies, resulting in longer survival rates. Handbook of Digital Technologies in Movement Disorders aims to unite these factors to provide a comprehensive guide to patient focused treatments for movement disorders. This book is divided into five distinct sections, starting with an introduction to digital technologies, concepts, and terminologies. The following section reviews various perspectives on technology in movement disorders, including patient and medical professionals. The third section presents technologies used in detecting, measuring progression, and determining response to treatments. This is followed by reviewing the technology used in various treatments of movement disorders including assistive and robotic technologies. Finally, the last section examines the challenges with technology including privacy and other ethical issues. - Reviews different stakeholders' perspectives on technology in movement disorders - Presents technological advancements for diagnosing, monitoring, and managing Parkinson's disease - Discusses challenges with implementing technology into treatment

As Parkinson's disease affects many systems of human body, a multimodality treatment of this condition is necessary to improve the quality of life of patients. This book provides detailed information on the currently available variety of treatments for Parkinson's disease including pharmacotherapy, physical therapy and surgical treatments of Parkinson's disease. Postoperative care of patients of Parkinson's disease has also been discussed in an organized manner in this text. Clinicians dealing with day to day problems caused by Parkinson's disease as well as other healthcare workers can use beneficial treatment outlines provided in this book.

Disorders of Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Parkinson's Disease

Disorders of Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Parkinson's Disease PDF Author: Aleksandar Videnovic
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3709116317
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 231

Book Description
This book is the first to take into account the rapidly growing body of knowledge on the relation between sleep and PD. Gathering contributions from internationally recognized experts, it provides a unique source of in-depth information on sleep and circadian dysregulation in Parkinson’s disease. The book is divided into two parts: the first comprises chapters on normal sleep-wake homeostasis, followed by changes that occur in PD and discussions of available tools for the assessment of sleep-wake cycles in PD. In the second part, sleep and circadian disorders associated with PD are described in individual chapters, including sections on epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Controversies in the field, such as the relations between cognition and sleep, fatigue and sleepiness, and the potential impact of surgical therapies on sleep-wake cycles are discussed separately. The book closes with a chapter on future directions and unmet needs in the field of sleep, circadian biology and PD. This comprehensive text offers a readily accessible resource for clinicians and researchers alike, addressing the needs of neurologists, sleep and movement disorders specialists, and all trainees and allied health professionals involved in the care of patients affected by Parkinson’s disease.
