Book Description
Located in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts on the island of Martha's Vineyard, Wesleyan Grove occupies a storied place in the history of the camp meeting movement. Shortly after the Civil War, Wesleyan Grove began developing a feature revolutionary for a camp meeting site: cottages (rather than tents) for those who were far from home. The plan and architectural characteristics of Wesleyan Grove were soon emulated by many other camp meeting sites (including celebrated Ocean Grove), and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005 for its role as a prototype for the permanent camp meetings popular in the late nineteenth century. In this 1858 volume, Reverend Hebron Vincent traces the earliest history of Wesleyan Grove and also includes a fascinating appendix listing rules for camp meetings.

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Wesleyan Grove, Martha's Vineyard, Camp Meeting: From the First Meeting Held There in 1835, to That of 1858, Inclusive; Interspersed With Touching Incidents and General Remarks Why Write the history of any particular camp meeting? In reply to this question, I would say, that I desire to do good, and believe I may be likely to accomplish this object, to some extent, by giving to the public, in a somewhat permanent form, some of the most material facts and reminiscences connected with a place hallowed by a thousand Christian associations; by the preaching of so many gospel sermons by the offering up of so many earnest prayers of faith; by the uttering of so many pa thetic appeals to the unconverted, and so many exhilarating songs of praise to God; by so many sinners saved, and so many believers quickened. If the salvation of the human soul is of such vast importance as it is believed to be by all Christen dom, Why should not the place and circumstances of its conversion to God be regarded as of sufficient consequence to be made matters of enduring record? The Evangelical Counter-Enlightenment

The Evangelical Counter-Enlightenment PDF Author: William R. Everdell
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030697622
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 449

Book Description
This contribution to the global history of ideas uses biographical profiles of 18th-century contemporaries to find what Salafist and Sufi Islam, Evangelical Protestant and Jansenist Catholic Christianity, and Hasidic Judaism have in common. Such figures include Muḥammad Ibn abd al-Waḥhab, Count Nikolaus Zinzendorf, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Israel Ba’al Shem Tov. The book is a unique and comprehensive study of the conflicted relationship between the “evangelical” movements in all three Abrahamic religions and the ideas of the Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment. Centered on the 18th century, the book reaches back to the third century for precedents and context, and forward to the 21st for the legacy of these movements. This text appeals to students and researchers in many fields, including Philosophy and Religion, their histories, and World History, while also appealing to the interested lay reader.

Methodism in the American Forest

Methodism in the American Forest PDF Author: Russell E. Richey
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199359636
Category : Religion

Pages : 239

Book Description
Winner of the 2015 Saddleback Selection Award from the Historical Society of The United Methodist Church During the nineteenth century, camp meetings became a signature program of American Methodists and an extraordinary engine for their remarkable evangelistic outreach. Methodism in the American Forest explores the ways in which Methodist preachers interacted with and utilized the American woodland, and the role camp meetings played in the denomination's spread across the country. Half a century before they made themselves such a home in the woods, the people and preachers learned the hard way that only a fool would adhere to John Wesley's mandate for preaching in fields of the New World. Under the blazing American sun, Methodist preachers sought and found a better outdoor sanctuary for large gatherings: under the shade of great oaks, a natural cathedral where they held forth with fervid sermons. The American forests, argues Russell E. Richey, served the preachers in several important ways. Like a kind of Gethesemane, the remote, garden-like solitude provided them with a place to seek counsel from the Holy Spirit. They also saw the forest as a desolate wilderness, and a means for them to connect with Israel's years after the Exodus and Jesus's forty days in the desert after his baptism by John. The dauntless preachers slashed their way through, following America's expanding settlement, and gradually sacralizing American woodlands as cathedral, confessional, and spiritual challenge-as shady grove, as garden, and as wilderness. The threefold forest experience became a Methodist standard. The meeting of Methodism's basic governing body, the quarterly conference, brought together leadership of all levels. The event stretched to two days in length and soon great crowds were drawn by the preaching and eventually the sacraments that were on offer. Camp meetings, if not a Methodist invention, became the movement's signature, a development that Richey tracks throughout the years that Methodism matured, to become a central denomination in America's religious landscape.
