When first commissioned by the church to compile this history, I realized that the task would be unusually difficult. I doubted that I had the depth of knowledge or the expertise to delve into one hundred years of the work of the church. Nevertheless, I resolved to try because a history of First Baptist had never been written. In anticipation of celebrating its centennial in 1989, the church designated me in 1983 to record a story of its activities from its birth. I have been a member of the church since 1935, over half its life. As I began the project, I turned to Webster's dictionary for a definition of history.
