Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Liverpool This book is an attempt to present the life-story of the community of Liverpool in a concise and consecutive narrative, designed rather for the citizen than for the professed historical student. It makes no claim to be regarded as a final or authoritative treatment of its subject; for, though it contains new facts or new views upon a good many points, its author is well aware that a vast deal of painstaking investigation will still be necessary before any such treatment will be possible. On the other hand it does not aim at being suitable for use in elementary schools: I am glad to think that a little book, designed for that purpose, is being prepared by an abler pen. Nor does this book pretend to supersede preceding works on the same theme: its scale and plan having necessitated the omission of great masses of fact for which the inquirer will still repair to Baines and Picton. In view of the purpose of the book, it has been thought wise not to load its pages with references to authorities. I have, however, added in an appendix a short descriptive essay on the principal sources from which information can be drawn on the history of Liverpool. Book Description
Excerpt from Liverpool Public Libraries: A History of Fifty Years Public Libraries Act of 1850, a strong feeling had grown up, among thoughtful and enlightened men interested in the cause of education, that the lack of public collections of books in the great centres of population, helpful to all classes of students, was a matter which called for speedy remedy. Our working classes it was felt, were too self-satisfied with the lead they had hitherto taken in trade and manufactures, and that if that lead was to be maintained, greater technical knowledge and political wisdom was not only desirable but essential. Book Description
Excerpt from Liverpool: In King Charles the Second's Time The survey of his property in Liverpool, prepared by Edward Moore of Bank Hall for the guidance of William, his son and heir, and drawn up in 1668, has long been known to historians. It formed one of the early volumes of the Chetham Society's publications, and was edited in 1847 by the late Mr. Thomas Heywood. The original manuscript at that time, and for some years after, was in the possession of Mr. Thomas Moore of Seacombe, who claimed descent from the Moores of Bank Hall. At his death in 1879 it was bought by Mr. Henry Young of Liverpool, who decided to publish it, so that its valuable and quaint description of the town, as it was in the reign of Charles the Second, might be accessible to the general reader. For this purpose the late Sir James Picton was asked to prepare it for the press, and he actually began the work, which was however not completed, and at his death the matter was allowed to rest until the present editor undertook the task. Thus, though the manuscript is not printed for the first time, it has never before been published, its issue to members of the Chetham Society not constituting publication. Further, being printed for the members of the Chetham Society, a very limited number of copies was issued, so that the work is rare and practically only known to experts. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tales of Old Liverpool Mr. Caleb Crossley was a wealthy man. Ho lived in a style of great magnificence at his mansion, a short distance from town; gave frequent routs and parties to his contemporary magnates and their families; kept his coach and pair and a large retinue of servants; and, in a manner, richly merited the pseudonym which old Liverpudlians christened him - namely, Caleb Croesus. Melville House was the name by which his mansion was known, and the most important person in that establishment, after himself and family, was a Mr. George Brown, his major demo, butler, and right hand man. Brown, who hailed from somewhere in Cumberland, had wormed himself cleverly into his master's confidence, until ho became us indispensable to him as his head cashier or managing clerk at the office. He had the entire control of everything that took place in Melville House; the arrangement of balls and festivities of all kinds; the engaging and supervision of the servants; and the personal regulation of the outlay and requirements inimical to the wants of such an establishment. Mr. Crossley being a widower with two grown up daughters, who took little interest in household matters, the duty devolved on Brown to fill the hiatus, and this he succeeded in doing to the fullest satisfaction.
