Book Description
Divided into sections covering various types of telegraph and famous for having thrown light upon the pioneering work of Edward Davy, this survey of the earliest telegraph systems covers the developments through the commercial patents granted in England to Cooke and Wheatstone before the internationalization of the Morse system. It is the most exhaustive record available of early telegraph pioneers and their inventions, as well as being the first work of an accomplished electrical communications historian. Arno reprinted the sequel in the 1971 History of Broadcasting series. Extremely thorough, with many documents reprinted or extracted this is an essential reference work.

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Electric Telegraphy, to the Year 1837 India, where, having a good deal of spare time on our hands, we indulged our habits to the full. In 1871, having amassed a large number of notes, scraps, &c., on submarine telegraphy, we began a work on the history and working of the Persian Gulf cables, of which we had then had over three years' practical experience. Gradually this developed itself into an ambitious treatise, which we styled Submarine Telegraphs, their Construction, Submersion, and Maintenance, including their Testing and Practical Working. Of this some three hundred pages (foolscap) are now lying submerged in the depths of our trunk, to be, perhaps, recovered at some future day - if, haply, they do not share the fate of our History of Ruins! Book Description
Here is an often cited panoramic history of the telegraph which discusses the principal telegraph firms and the key persons within them. Throughout his work, Reid stresses the business and economic aspects of marketing this remarkable scientific invention. The importance of The Telegraph in America as a classic reference in the field is under-scored by the fact that the author was active in telegraphy throughout the period he discusses. He thus had a personal knowledge of persons and events under examination.

The Formative Years of the Telegraph Union

The Formative Years of the Telegraph Union PDF Author: Gabriele Balbi
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443883379
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
This volume brings together the results of fresh research into the formative years of the International Telegraph Union (TU), in the period 1849–1875. Its internationalist approach is based on the careful scrutiny of a wealth of primary sources – conference minutes, correspondence, and parliamentary bills, among others – and calls for a fresh appraisal of the mechanics of the TU itself, as well as the moves and manoeuvres caused by constant diplomatic pressure. The methodology used here is multidisciplinary, representative of the contributors, who come from various scientific approaches and possess different skills and competences. The result of over three years’ detailed research, the book is simultaneously a history of media studies, international relations and business.
