Book Description
Georges Perrot was a French archaeologist, professor in the faculty of letters in Paris, and a prolific author. His book, entitled A History of Art in Ancient Egypt is a two volume set covering the art of Ancient Egypt via archaeological means and discovery. As an archaeologist, Perrot explored Greece, Asia Minor, and other famous locales for archaeological digging; his findings while on dig sites inspired a considerable amount of his writing. This particular series was written in tandem with co-author Charles Chipiez, who worked and studied alongside Perrot and was considered an equal authority in the field of archaeology by contemporaries. Together, these two men performed architectural studies on the most ancient monuments through careful observations of sculptures and ruins. After Chipiez's death, Perrot continued to write and publish books on their work together. This book contains a veritable well-spring of information on ancient Egypt and its culture. Specifically, the book explores several ancient structures of Egypt - their style and their architecture, as well as the materials used to make these and other Egyptian structures. No aspect of a given structure is too large or too small to warrant detailed discussion in this text, as the book explores everything from arches and cornerstones, to doors and windows. The book also contains detailed information on Egyptian artwork found at archaeological digs including sculptures, paintings, glass and pottery, jewelry, and metal work. One of the most remarkable features of A History of Art in Ancient Egypt is its artful use of illustrations, with almost six hundred engravings in the text and fourteen steel and colored plates used to great effect. Whether you're a casual reader looking to learn about the Ancient Egyptians or a scholar focusing in archaeology and ancient architecture, this book has something exciting for everyone! Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Art in Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 The fact is that Schnaase follows a geographical order, which is very confusing in its results. To give but one example of its absurdity, he speaks of the Phoenicians before he has said a word of Egypt; now, we all know that the art of Tyre and Sidon was but a late reflection from that of Egypt; the work shops of those two famous ports were mere factories of cheap Egyptian art objects for exportation. Book Description
Excerpt from The Arts Crafts of Ancient Egypt This present handbook is intended to aid in the understanding of Egyptian art, and the illustrations and descriptions are selected for that purpose only. The history of the art would require a far greater range Of examples, in order to illustrate the growth and decay of each of the great periods; whereas here only the most striking works Of each period are shown, in order to contrast the different civilisa tions. The origins and connections of the art in each age are scarcely touched, and the technical de tails are only such as are needed to see the conditions of the art. The archaeology of the subject would need as wide a treatment as the history, and these subjects can only appear here incidentally. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 of 2 The work here offered to the public, conceived and commenced in the year 1876, was designed to supply what seemed a crying need of English literature - viz., an account of Ancient Egypt, combining its antiquities with its history, addressed partly to the eye, and pre senting to the reader, within a reasonable compass, the chief points of Egyptian life - manners, customs, art, science, literature, religion - together with a tolerably full statement of the general course of historical events, whereof Egypt was the scene, from the foundation of the monarchy to the loss of independence. Existing English histories of Ancient Egypt were either slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Exhibition of the Art of Ancient Egypt, 1895 Happily, year by year they are being slowly but surely amassed. None of the present generation can expect to trace the stream from its source to its termination. The task of exploration, however, affords keener enjoyment than the passage when the course is clear, and certainly the discoveries of late years have been such as must stir the coldest imagination. Up to the middle Of the present century it was generally believed that Egyptian art, through its long duration of many centuries, remained stationary, that the artists continued repeating the same forms. This notion was derived from the writings of the Greeks and Romans, probably echoing what they had heard from the priests and learned men of Egypt of their own day. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Ancient Egyptians As works on the early Orient multiply, it becomes more and more easy to produce such books at second and third hand, which are thus separated by a long remove from the original monuments forming our primary sources of knowledge. As the use of this vol ume is in a measure conditioned by the method which produced it, may the author state that it is based di rectly and immediately upon the monuments, and in most cases upon the original monuments, rather than upon any published edition of the same? For this pur pose the historical monuments still standing in Egypt, or installed in the museums of Europe (the latter in to to), were copied or collated by the author anew ad hoc and rendered into English (see infra, p. 445, B. Trans lations, bar). Upon this complete version the present volume rests. Those students who desire to consult the sources upon which any given fact is based, are re ferred to this English corpus. A full bibliography of each original monument, if desired, will also be found there, and hence no references to such technical bibliog raphy will be found herein, thus freeing the reader from a mass of workshop debris, to which, however, he can easily refer, if he desires it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Faith of Ancient Egypt Pictures of monuments, statues, hieroglyphics and symbols of. Ancient Egypt are inserted, that the reader may have before his eyes a demonstration of the high and comprehensive civilization to which the Ancient Egyptians had attained. The pictures are rare, and in some instances offer a view of what the ruins must have been, in the days of completeness and splendor. Concerning the actual ruins, information may be gained in any library which contains books on Egypt; but the reconstructions here shown are taken from skillful engravings made by French artists more than one hundred years ago, and will put the reader in actual and immediate touch with The Faith of Ancient Egypt. Book Description
Excerpt from Kings and Queens of Ancient Egypt It is not as Works of art that I would consider these pictures, but as works of intellect. Works of art, as such, probably need no introduction. It is because these studies of Egyptian kings have a significance other than that Of their painting that I have been allowed to set down my thoughts concerning them.
