The useful purpose served by the little volume put forth at that time might be sufficient justification for the present publication, but there are special reasons for this issue. No full and accurate his tory of the Presbyterian Church of Bridgeton has yet been printed. Most useful material for such a history is passing away with the flight of time, for much of it IS written only in the memory of those who were them selves a part of the events. If the bones, scattered pro miscuouslyin imperfect church records, are ever to be articulated into human form and clothed with flesh it is high time the task were undertaken. There is another call for doing this work now. Presbyterianism in Bridgeton has reached its one hundredthfmilestone. This is the centennial year. A history of our beginnings, struggles, and progress, always valuable and interesting, ought to prove even inspiring at this moment. It should arouse gratitude for the past and enthusiasm for the great work yet before the Presbyterian Church in Bridgeton. Iner rancy is not claimed for what is here written; but great pains have been taken to avoid mistakes. Acknowledg ment is made of valuable assistance from Judge L. Q. C. Elmer's History of Cumberland County, Dr. Enoch Fithian's History of the Greenwich Church, and a ser mon preached by the Rev. J. Allen Maxwell, D. Excerpt from A History of the First Presbyterian Church of Paterson, New Jersey In 1813 the only church in Paterson was the Old Dutch Church of Totowa. It was built in 1775 and stood on what is now Ryle avenue, south of Matlock street. It was in this church that Presbyterians then residing in Paterson had been accustomed to gather for public worship. Paterson was founded as a city in 1792, and the town was only two years old when Miss Sarah Colt, at the suggestion of her brother, Peter, gathered little children together and formed a Sabbath School. The records of the Sabbath School were destroyed in the fire in the lecture room in 1886, and for its early history we must rely on tradition handed down from one generation to another. The persistent tradition that a Sabbath School was founded in Paterson in 17 94 is upheld by Henry Clay Trumbull's Yale Lectures on the Sab bath School, where we read: A Sunday School was organized at the home of Mr. Thomas Crenshaw, in Hanover County, Va., in 1786. In January, 1791, at Philadelphia, the first Day or Sunday School Society was formed. In 1791 a Sunday School was started in Boston; in 1793 one was started in New York by Katy Ferguson, a colored woman; in 17 94 one was started in Paterson. Robert Raikes opened the first Sunday School at Gloucester, England, in 1780. The school founded in Paterson by Sarah Colt was thus the first in New Jersey and one of the first in the United States. There was a stream of rather generous propor tions that made its way from the Scotch Plains notch through the watercourse that is now not much more than a trickling rivulet, by comparison, and which we misname Green Brook. But then it broadened out into a pond that served to store up water power for a grist mill now between Watching Avenue and Somerset Street. This site was surrounded almost entirely by a grove of stately chestnut, oak and elm trees, save for a mossy place where the farmers of the country-side brought their grain to be ground into flour. D., LL.D., whose portrait we give in the Hand-book, is the present Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. He is also the President of Lake Forest University, Chicago, Ill. He was born September 23d, 1832, in Cardiganshire, South Wales, and came with his parents to this country in 1849. He graduated from Princeton College in 1855, and from the Theological Seminary in 1858. His first church was the First Presbyterian Wilmington, Del. From thence he was called, in the fall of 1861, to the First Church of Columbus, 0. In 1864 he removed to Eliza beth, N. J and became co-pastor with Rev. Dr. Magie. Two years later he organized the Westminster Church of Elizabeth. After a very successful pastorate of five years in this church, he was elected in 1881 Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church. After serving in this position with great ability for six years, he was induced by most flattering offers to take charge of the prosperous institution over which he now presides.
