In Challenging Social Inequality, an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars and development workers explores the causes, consequences, and contemporary reactions to Brazil's sharply unequal agrarian structure. They focus on the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST)—Latin America's largest and most prominent social movement—and its ongoing efforts to confront historic patterns of inequality in the Brazilian countryside. O trabalho pretende compreender o surgimento de inúmeros movimentos sociais no campo brasileiro a partir da segunda metade da década de 90. O constante conflito social em torno das questões de terra permeiam toda a história de desenvolvimento deste país. São diversos segmentos desta sociedade que lutaram e lutam por terra, entre eles, aparece a mais nova organização social de luta por Reforma Agrária denominada de Movimento dos Sem Terra, que tem como o seu principal representante o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST). A partir da espacialização do MST, começa a surgir uma grande quantidade de movimentos de sem terra organizados separadamente a este movimento, principalmente por dois motivos: ou foram organizados com objetivos e propostas diferentes das apresentadas pelo MST, ou surgiram de conflitos internos a este movimento, causando cisões entre os sujeitos da luta. Temos como objeto privilegiado da análise um destes novos movimentos sociais no campo chamado de Movimento de Libertação dos Sem Terra (MLST). Este trabalho atenta para as contradições da luta pela terra no Brasil.
