Excerpt from A Handbook to Cotton Spinning: Compiled for the General Use of Young Carders, Spinning Overlookers, and All Students of Cotton Spinning The Author, having been an erector and starter of new Cotton Mills in most manufacturing towns in England, America, France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland, with a good many years experience, wishes the reader to bear in mind that he has written this book for the use of young carders and spinning overlookers, and his aim is to make the calculations as simple as possible, and touch on everything briefly and concisely, so that it can be a handy and useful book. The first thing the reader should do in practice is to see that all the machinery be well balanced and all shafts as true as possible; if the machines are not so, there is a continual shaking and vibrating of the machines, which will soon run them down and add to the work of the engine. The blowing-room machinery should be kept well oiled, clean, and in proper order, on account of the high speed; the same with the cardroom and spinning machinery.
