Within the last few years modes of manipulating have undergone many changes, and a vast number of processes, involving the use Of complex apparatus, have been invented. Chemistry is doubtless in a transition state; eventually, and, as it approaches perfection, processes will be simplified, and we shall obtain reactions by more simple and direct methods. Possibly, although we dare scarcely hope it, we may eventually rival the fabled simplicity of the Rosicrucian, and, by the aid Of a few simple vessels, Obtain far more beautiful compounds than we now procure with all our elaborate appliances. Manipulation is to chemistry what Bacon conceived mathe maties to be to science, and as such should know her place nevertheless the importance of manipulation cannot be over rated. The good, and therefore successful manipulator, will do far more work than he who is deficient in that respect, and his researches will be of a higher order. The time ex pended by an awkward or clumsy Operator in merely attain ing accuracy, will be devoted by the skilful chemist to the exploration of new fields. Excerpt from Chemical Manipulation: Being Instructions to Students in Chemistry on the Methods of Performing Experiments of Demonstration or Research, With Accuracy and Success My reason for venturing to add a new work on Chemistry to the many excellent productions which previously existed, was because there seemed to be a deficiency in the particular kind of instruction which it was my intention to convey. In the execution of my task, I endeavoured to make every other point subordinate to the one of embodying a mass of useful information on the practice of Experimental Chemistry. Being intended especially as a book of instruction, no attempts were made to render it pleasing, otherwise than by rendering it effectual; for I concluded that, if the work taught clearly what it was intended to inculcate, the high interest always belonging to a well made or successful experiment would be abundantly sufficient to give it all the requisite charms, and more than enough to make it valuable in the eyes of those for whom it was designed. It may well be supposed that the confirmation of my opinion by the necessity of a second Edition of the work affords me no slight pleasure, and I feel, even more than I did at first, the propriety of the view which I had taken of the character of the instruction required. Excerpt from Elementary Chemical Technics: A Handbook of Manipulation and Experimentation for Teachers of Limited Experience, and in Schools Where Chemistry Must Be Taught With Limited Appliances The office of this little book is expressed in its title. My faith that such a work may be of some service in the cause of science teaching, is founded in part upon a realization of what a valuable adjunct such a book would have been in the earlier years of my own teaching. No attempt has been made to write a text-book of Chemistry. There are enough good works of that nature to meet the requirements of every school. But from a proper regard for brevity, and sometimes from a lack of appreciation of the teacher's needs on the part of authors, text-books fail to give that careful detail of direction which will insure success in experimentation. In the chapter on the Metals I have made no mention of the more rare ones, considering only such as are likely to be worked with in the ordinary school courses. The terms of both the English and Metric systems are used, for I find that the two systems are used about equally in schools, and the tables provided in text-books render the conversion from one system to the other an easy matter. I wish to express my indebtedness to Prof. A. C. Boyden of the Bridgewater Normal, and to Mr. H. W. Tyler of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who have read the manuscript and proof-sheets, and given me valuable suggestions in my work.
