Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of Asia Minor, Vol. 1 Asia Minor is treated in four volumes, two of which are issued in separate parts. The first volume contains information of a general nature. The other volumes are devoted to the detailed description of topographical features, railways, roads, and cities. The second volume deals with the western part of the peninsula up to the Dalaman Chai, the rim of the plateau, and the route of the Anatolian Railway from Afium Kara Hissar to Izmid. To the third volume (divided into three parts) are assigned the mountains of the north from the Bosporus to the Halys, the central plains from Eski Shehir to Kaisari, and the mountains of the south from the Dalaman Chai to the Lamas Su. The fourth volume contains a description of the eastern part of the peninsula, and is divided into two parts, devoted respectively to the region between the Black Sea and Kaisari and to the country round the Gulf of Alexandretta - Cilicia, Antitaurus, and North Syria. It is necessary to emphasize the fact that in the circumstances the information given cannot be complete or up-to-date, and may occasionally be inaccurate. The Admiralty will be glad to receive corrections and additions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Geographical and Historical Description of Asia Minor, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Map The present volumes complete the plan I had originally proposed to myself of illustrating the geographical antiquities of the three countries, which offered the greatest interest to the classical student. Asia Minor presents a field of inquiry hardly inferior to the other two in historical importance, since it exhibits a nearly unbroken chain of events, from the siege of Troy to the downfall of Constantinople; and it possesses moreover one point of peculiar interest, from being so closely connected with the name and labours of St. Paul. With respect to the comparative geography of this extensive and diversified country, our information on several points, more especially in the interior, is still inadequate and defective. Book Description
Excerpt from Travels in Little-Known Parts of Asia Minor, Vol. 1 of 2 W E R E literary reputation the object of the writer of the following pages, he would greatly hesitate to lay them before an English-speaking public. The long use of five or six different languages, both in the general intercourse of social life and in the perform ance of his professional duties, has produced upon his mind and his habits of thinking an effect which those alone can fully appreciate who have fallen into the same predicament. He finds himself alternately thinking in each and all of these dialects, and rendering 'the idioms of the one in the words of another, until he is conscious that he has quite lost the faculty of dis tinguishing, in all cases, to what language belongs any particular shade of idea, or mode of speech which he happens to find best suited to his purpose. There is every reason to believe that this mental process will be found reflected upon these pages, and, without troubling his readers with a disquisition upon its ad vantages or blemishes, the author would sincerely apolo gize for any inconvenience it may cost them. But, owing to the peculiar interest attaching to that country, and the copiousness of the materials, the Editor has found it impracticable to adhere to this arrangement, so as to do justice to the subject. It has, therefore, been thought advisable to annex to the description of Syria, that of the adjoining pro vmce of Asia Minor, which forms another interest ing portion of the Turkish empire. Parts V. And VI. W111, in consequence, include the remainder of Syria with Asia Minor, - instead of Arabia, as was. Book Description
Excerpt from On Horseback Through Asia Minor, Vol. 1 of 2 IT has been said that a man often writes his book first, his preface last. The author of this work is no exception to the general rule. These volumes contain an account of a journey on horseback through Asia Minor. I was five months in that country, and traversed a district extending over 2000 miles. My limited leave of absence prevented me from staying more than a few days at the important towns which lay on the route.
