Book Description
Would you play chess or poker without learning the rules of the game first? Dealing with Norwegians without understanding the Norwegian way may be quite like playing chess or poker without knowing the rules. Norwegian workplaces are driven by a set of rules which are very different from those in other western cultures, leading to confusion and misunderstandings. Working with Norwegians explains in a clear and accessible way why they think and act as they do and what they expect. The book engages the readers in reflection upon social norms and values and what is considered acceptable behaviour in Norway. The chapters have tests to measure the cultural understanding and there is a section of real life exercises with solutions and explanations. This is the guide to understanding Norwegians in the workplace and their social life which will make you a more informed and confident colleague, business partner and friend. With enhanced awareness and confidence you should be more relaxed, have fun, and focus on building lasting, rewarding relationships. This guide should also be of interest to Norwegian readers who want to learn what members of other cultures sometimes find hard to deal with in their workplaces and social life. This book is also available in Norwegian with the title Kunsten å arbeide med nordmenn.

The Phonology of Norwegian

The Phonology of Norwegian PDF Author: Gjert Kristoffersen

Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 383

Book Description
A the end of the fourteenth century, Norway, having previously been an independent kingdom, became by conquest a province of Denmark and remained so for three centuries. In1814, as part of the fall-out from the Napoleonic wars, the country became a largely independent nation within the monarchy of Sweden. By this time, however, Danish had become the language of government, commerce, and education, as well as of the middle and upper classes. Nationalistic Norwegians sought to reestablish native identity by creating and promulgating a new language based partly on rural dialects and partly on Old Norse. The upper and middle classes sought to retain a form of Norwegian close to Danish that would be intelligible to themselves and to their neighbours in Sweden and Denmark. The controversy has gone on ever since. One result is that the standard dictionaries of Norwegian ignore pronunciation, for no version can be counted as 'received'. Norwegian Wood

Norwegian Wood PDF Author: Lars Mytting
Publisher: Abrams
ISBN: 1613128207
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
“A surprise best-seller which, apparently, has the power to turn even the most feeble of us into axe-wielding lumberjacks.” —Independent The latest Scandinavian publishing phenomenon is not a Stieg Larsson-like thriller; it’s a book about chopping, stacking, and burning wood that has sold more than 200,000 copies in Norway and Sweden and has been a fixture on the bestseller lists there for more than a year. Norwegian Wood provides useful advice on the rustic hows and whys of taking care of your heating needs, but it’s also a thoughtful attempt to understand man’s age-old predilection for stacking wood and passion for open fires. An intriguing window into the exoticism of Scandinavian culture, the book also features enough inherently interesting facts and anecdotes and inspired prose to make it universally appealing. The U.S. edition is a fully updated version of the Norwegian original, and includes an appendix of U.S.-based resources and contacts. “A how-to guide as well as a celebration of wood—its scent, its variability, and the way it can connect modern life to simpler times . . . You don’t need to have a wood-burning stove or fireplace to be captivated by the craft and lore surrounding a Stone Age method of creating heat.” —The Boston Globe “The book has spread like wildfire.” —Daily Mail “A how-to book with poetry at its heart.” —The Times Literary Supplement
