Successful Conservation Strategies for Sea Turtles

Successful Conservation Strategies for Sea Turtles PDF Author: Monica Lara Uc
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781634633796

Book Description
After decades of research, monitoring, and analysis, we still have so much to learn about sea turtles. As reptiles, they are environmentally sensitive animals and thus can sense acute changes in their habitat. This rudimentary tactic of ectothermic animals has possibly conceded to the survival of sea turtle populations over millions of years. They have endured cooling and warming of the earth. The habitats they depend on have endured fierce hurricanes and erosion. Now the question remains if sea turtle populations and their habitats will survive the challenges and pressures that humans place on the world. The anthology of research presented in this textbook is diverse and yet so interconnected. We cannot work to conserve wildlife populations without a fundamental understanding of habitat or the range of changes that individuals within a population can tolerate. Sea turtles are no exception. Changes in migration patterns due to climate change, diversity of food sources between species, acute habitat selection for nesting, mutations in genetics, and differences in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry between species and even individuals make the study of sea turtles dynamic and challenging.

TURTLE CONSERVATION

TURTLE CONSERVATION PDF Author: KLEMENS MICHAEL W
Publisher: Smithsonian Books (DC)
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
"Turtle Conservation provides a comprehensive analysis of threats to turtles and tortoises worldwide. Considering the most significant problems facing the group, Michael Klemens and eighteen international experts on turtle biology and conservation chart successes and failures of past conservation programs, discuss the use of genetics and demography in turtle conservation, and propose more effective strategies that take into account chelonian biology as well as the economic and social situations affecting turtle conservation efforts. They review the outlook for marine, freshwater, semi-aquatic, and terrestrial species; show how turtles make poor candidates for most wild-harvest programs; and propose that turtle and tortoise conservation efforts be integrated into more broadly focused, locally supported land-use projects." "For land and wildlife managers as well as herpetologists and conservation biologists, this book provides a wide-ranging survey of efforts to conserve one of the world's most ancient and endangered groups."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Conservation of Pacific Sea Turtles

Conservation of Pacific Sea Turtles PDF Author: Peter H. Dutton
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 0824860195
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 498

Book Description
Across the Pacific, populations of some species of sea turtles face extinction unless recent dramatic declines are reversed. The continuing decline of leatherbacks and loggerheads in particular illustrates the limitations of the current gradual and unilateral approach to conservation. Recovery requires instead a holistic solution that addresses all sources of mortality throughout the entire life history and habitat use of these transnational populations. Historically conservation efforts have focused on nesting sites to protect eggs and breeding females; mortality from coastal and highseas fisheries was not addressed. In the past five years, these recovery efforts have widened to include rigorously curtailing fishing and technological fixes that lower rates of incidental sea turtle deaths during fishing. Although each of these approaches shows promise, it has become increasingly clear that they alone will not recover severely depleted populations. Recognizing the urgency of the problem, this book presents ideas and case studies by conservation biologists, economists, marine life policy experts, fishing industry and fisheries professionals, management specialists, and development assistance researchers. It provides a new synthesis and blueprint for action that shifts the paradigm from piecemeal and unilateral conservation to a more holistic and multilateral approach to the recovery of Pacific sea turtle populations.

The Biology of Sea Turtles, Volume I

The Biology of Sea Turtles, Volume I PDF Author: Peter L. Lutz
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351411292
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 446

Book Description
Sea turtles have existed for millions of years, making them fascinating subjects of study. In the last 20 years, the science of sea turtle biology has expanded at an exponential rate, leading to major advances in many areas. This book synthesizes the results of these advances and focuses on how these endangered marine reptiles operate in, adapt to, and are dependent upon particular features of their marine environment. New technology in data gathering, such as DNA analyses, remote sensing, and physiological monitoring techniques, has led to a much greater understanding of the biology of the sea turtle at all stages of their life history.
