Book Description
Computational aeroacoustics is rapidly emerging as an essential element in the study of aerodynamic sound. As with all emerging technologies, it is paramount that we assess the various opportuni ties and establish achievable goals for this new technology. Essential to this process is the identification and prioritization of fundamental aeroacoustics problems which are amenable to direct numerical siIn ulation. Questions, ranging from the role numerical methods play in the classical theoretical approaches to aeroacoustics, to the correct specification of well-posed numerical problems, need to be answered. These issues provided the impetus for the Workshop on Computa tional Aeroacoustics sponsored by ICASE and the Acoustics Division of NASA LaRC on April 6-9, 1992. The participants of the Work shop were leading aeroacousticians, computational fluid dynamicists and applied mathematicians. The Workshop started with the open ing remarks by M. Y. Hussaini and the welcome address by Kristin Hessenius who introduced the keynote speaker, Sir James Lighthill. The keynote address set the stage for the Workshop. It was both an authoritative and up-to-date discussion of the state-of-the-art in aeroacoustics. The presentations at the Workshop were divided into five sessions - i) Classical Theoretical Approaches (William Zorumski, Chairman), ii) Mathematical Aspects of Acoustics (Rodolfo Rosales, Chairman), iii) Validation Methodology (Allan Pierce, Chairman), iv) Direct Numerical Simulation (Michael Myers, Chairman), and v) Unsteady Compressible Flow Computa tional Methods (Douglas Dwoyer, Chairman).

Encyclopedia of Acoustics, 4 Volume Set PDF Author: Malcolm J. Crocker
Publisher: Wiley-Interscience
ISBN: 9780471804659
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 2096

Book Description
Acoustics, sound, and vibration effects everything from the design of a concert hall to the workings of a stereo system to the intricacies of the human ear. This book examines all aspects of acoustics. It covers engineering aspects (aerodynamics and jet noise, interaction of fluid motion and sound, infrasound, ultrasonics, quantum acoustics, etc.) and scientific aspects (auditory function, acoustical properties of the outer and inner ear, psychological speech perception, music and musical acoustics, hearing and sound perception among vertebrate/invertebrate animals).

Handbook of Acoustics

Sir James Lighthill And Modern Fluid Mechanics

Sir James Lighthill And Modern Fluid Mechanics PDF Author: Lokenath Debnath
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1908978937
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
This is perhaps the first book containing biographical information of Sir James Lighthill and his major scientific contributions to the different areas of fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, aerodynamics, linear and nonlinear waves in fluids, geophysical fluid dynamics, biofluiddynamics, aeroelasticity, boundary layer theory, generalized functions, and Fourier series and integrals. Special efforts is made to present Lighthill's scientific work in a simple and concise manner, and generally intelligible to readers who have some introduction to fluid mechanics. The book also includes a list of Lighthill's significant papers.Written for the mathematically literate reader, this book also provides a glimpse of Sir James' serious attempt to stimulate interest in mathematics and its diverse applications among the general public of the world, his profound influence on teaching of mathematics and science with newer applications, and his deep and enduring concern on enormous loss of human lives, economic and marine resources by natural hazards. By providing detailed background information and knowledge, sufficient to start interdisciplinary research, it is intended to serve as a ready reference guide for readers interested in advanced study and research in modern fluid mechanics./a
