Once Upon a Time in Delaware (Classic Reprint)

Once Upon a Time in Delaware (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Katharine Pyle
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331606683
Category : History

Book Description
Excerpt from Once Upon a Time in Delaware This book is published by the Delaware Society of the Colonial Dames of America for the use, primarily, of the children of Delaware, in school and out. Its style and matter are therefor chosen to suit young readers. Many historical points in these stories are more or less disputed. The original sources do not always agree. In preparing these stories of Delaware for children's reading, it has been thought best to use anecdotes and interesting traditions whenever they could be found. The result is a substantially true set of stories, which do not however, undertake to settle the facts in any disputed case, but are designed to leave in a child's mind the broad outlines of Delaware history. The stories have all been read and revised by the Hon. Alexander B. Cooper of New Castle, to whom the thanks of the Colonial Dames are here expressed for his wise and constant help. The Rev. Joseph B. Turner, of Dover, has also kindly read over several of the stories. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Government of Delaware (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: George S. Messersmith

Book Description
Excerpt from The Government of Delaware I venture to make a few suggestions which may be helpful to some teachers. I. It will generally be found most productive of good results to teach Delaware government prior to United States government. The first half of the year may be devoted to State government and the latter half to national government. II. In the high schools and in classes of fairly mature students the whole book should be used for class work. In the ungraded schools the teacher must use discretion in determining on which parts to lay most stress. In un graded schools it would be inadvisable to spend much time on the chapter on Wilmington City Government. III. In general the subject-matter should be taken up in the order in which it appears. This arrangement is logical and carries the pupil from the comparatively simple local government to the more complex State government. IV. The topics in a chapter on which stress is to be laid must be determined by the teacher. All useless matter has been kept out of the text, but it is evident that not all topics are of equal importance. The jurisdiction of the various courts in the chapter on the Delaware Courts can be stated more briefly by the teacher for younger students. The Delaware Water Gap

The Delaware Water Gap PDF Author: L. W. Brodhead
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781527974210
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
Excerpt from The Delaware Water Gap: Its Scenery, Its Legends and Early History He has only attempted to furnish that which those who visit the place constantly demand, and which he has failed in inducing those more experienced and more competent than himself to undertake. Less mention, however, is made of the House itself than one less interested would, perhaps, have given; and as to the places described, they have but to be visited to justify all that is said in their praise. To the author this maiden effort has been but a labor of love, - the anticipation of gain in any form having no impulse, - as most of the places described were the play-grounds of his boyhood, the rambles of his youth, and are the admiration of his manhood. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the State of Delaware, Vol. 3 of 3 In the year 1806 the General Assembly passed an Act which authorized the continuance in full force of the Act of 1796 and the supplementary Act of 1797 until the first of January, 1820. In 1823 the General Assembly passed an Act that the entire school fund which had been raised from the sources named should be deposited in the Farmers' Bank. Thus it appears that the little mustard-seed faithfully invested from year to year was destined to increase and multiply, and the establishment of a school fund in Delaware really dates from the year 1797.
