Book Description
Excerpt from A New Edition of a Free Inquiry Into the Miraculous Powers Which Are Supposed to Have Subsisted in the Christian Church: From the Earliest Ages Through Several Successive Centuries, Upon the Authority of the Primitive Fathers "The Bible, I say, the Bible, is the religion of Protestants. I, for my part, after a long, and (as I believe and hope) impartial search after the true way to eternal happiness, do profess plainly that I cannot find any rest for the sole of my foot but upon this rock only. I see plainly, and with my own eyes, that there are Popes against Popes, and Councils against Councils; some Fathers against other Fathers; the same Fathers against themselves; a consent of Fathers of one age against a consent of Fathers of another age; traditive interpretations of Scripture are pretended, but there are few or none to be found. No tradition but that of Scripture can derive itself from the fountain, but may be plainly proved either to have been brought in in such an age of Christ, or that in such an age it was not in. In a word, there is no sufficient certainty but of Scripture, for any considering man to build upon. This, therefore, and this only, I have reason to believe. This I will profess, according to this I will live; and for this, if there be occasion, I will not only willingly, but gladly lose my life, though I should be sorry that Christians should take it from me." Book Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
