Fracture Mechanics Assessment of Fatigue Cracks in Offshore Tubular Structures

Fracture Mechanics Assessment of Fatigue Cracks in Offshore Tubular Structures PDF Author: Daren Bowness

ISBN: 9780717623280
Category : Fracture mechanics
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
With the introduction of Safety Case Regulations, following Lord Cullen's report on the Piper Alpha disaster, a Safety Case, which is renewed every three years, is required for each installation operating in UK waters, to ensure that structural integrity is maintained. The reassessment of structural integrity is therefore an important issue amongst offshore operators. Fracture mechanics analysis, using the stress intensity factor, provides the only viable means to assess the remaining fatigue life of cracked tubular joints. Also, assessing the significance of the fatigue damage allows expensive in-service inspections to be scheduled effectively, thus improving safety. The economic benefit of a reliable fatigue crack growth analysis procedure can thus be significant, as it enables the risk of fatigue failure to be properly evaluated, allowing expensive repairs of damaged components to be carried out only when necessary. The results of this research are therefore of interest to offshore oil and gas operators and authorities enforcing offshore safety regulations.

Fatigue Assessment of Welded Joints by Local Approaches

Fatigue Assessment of Welded Joints by Local Approaches PDF Author: Dieter Radaj
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing
ISBN: 1845691881
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 661

Book Description
Local approaches to fatigue assessment are used to predict the structural durability of welded joints, to optimise their design and to evaluate unforeseen joint failures. This standard work provides a systematic survey of the principles and practical applications of the various methods. It covers the hot spot structural stress approach to fatigue in general, the notch stress and notch strain approach to crack initiation and the fracture mechanics approach to crack propagation. Seam-welded and spot-welded joints in structural steels and aluminium alloys are also considered. This completely reworked second edition takes into account the tremendous progress in understanding and applying local approaches which has been achieved in the last decade. It is a standard reference for designers, structural analysts and testing engineers who are responsible for the fatigue-resistant in-service behaviour of welded structures. Completely reworked second edition of a standard work providing a systematic survey of the principles and practical applications of the various methods Covers the hot spot structural stress approach to fatigue in general, the notch stress and notch strain approach to crack initiation and the fracture mechanics approach to crack propagation. Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics of Offshore Structures

Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics of Offshore Structures PDF Author: Linus Etube
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Etube (mechanical engineering, University College London) presents novel research and the results of wave-induced stress on the operational life of offshore structures. Using the results of an investigation undertaken to assess the fatigue and fracture performance of steels used in the industry, the five chapters discuss details of the methodology to develop a typical jack-up offshore standard load history (JOSH); factors that influence fatigue resistance of structural steels used in the construction of jack-up structures; methods used to model the relevant factors for inclusion in JOSH, with emphasis on loading and structural response interaction; results and details of experimental variable amplitude corrosion fatigue tests conducted using JOSH; and a novel generalized methodology for fast assessment of offshore structural welded joints.
