Book Description
Background and ObjectiveFetal growth and size are known indicators of perinatal health, although the etiology of this relationship is unclear, and twins are known to differ from singletons with respect to fetal growth trajectories over the course of pregnancy. With a lack of research on ultrasound-based fetal weight references in twin populations, this study aimed to construct ultrasound-based in utero fetal weight references for each gestational age for a twin population.MethodsTwins delivered at a tertiary care hospital in Montreal were used in this study. Fetal weight was calculated using a published formula that was validated in this population. Fetal growth was then modeled in twins using serial ultrasound measurements of fetal weight, and adjusting for sex and chorionicity. Linear mixed models were used to adjust for the correlation between twins from the same pregnancy, and for the use of multiple ultrasound measurements for each fetus. Restricted cubic ...

Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Weight Gain During Pregnancy PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309131138
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 868

Book Description
As women of childbearing age have become heavier, the trade-off between maternal and child health created by variation in gestational weight gain has become more difficult to reconcile. Weight Gain During Pregnancy responds to the need for a reexamination of the 1990 Institute of Medicine guidelines for weight gain during pregnancy. It builds on the conceptual framework that underscored the 1990 weight gain guidelines and addresses the need to update them through a comprehensive review of the literature and independent analyses of existing databases. The book explores relationships between weight gain during pregnancy and a variety of factors (e.g., the mother's weight and height before pregnancy) and places this in the context of the health of the infant and the mother, presenting specific, updated target ranges for weight gain during pregnancy and guidelines for proper measurement. New features of this book include a specific range of recommended gain for obese women. Weight Gain During Pregnancy is intended to assist practitioners who care for women of childbearing age, policy makers, educators, researchers, and the pregnant women themselves to understand the role of gestational weight gain and to provide them with the tools needed to promote optimal pregnancy outcomes.

Management of Multiple Pregnancies

Management of Multiple Pregnancies PDF Author: Leanne Bricker
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108910270
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 377

Book Description
Multiple pregnancies are associated with higher risks for both mother and babies. Women with multiple pregnancies have an increased risk of miscarriage, anemia, hypertensive disorders, haemorrhage, and postnatal illness. These pregnancies are more likely to need an operative delivery, and maternal mortality is generally 2.5 times that of singleton births. Fetuses are at increased risk for anatomic and genetic anomalies, growth abnormalities, prematurity, and several physiological problems related to monochorionicity. This book provides a much needed, up-to-date guide to the management of multiple pregnancies. Presented with a uniform approach to all chapters, information is easily navigable, evidence-based, and highly practical. Heavily illustrated, particularly with ultrasound images – the cornerstone of management of multiple pregnancies - this book will appeal to obstetricians and specialists in maternal-fetal medicine, midwives and ultrasonographers and will improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
