Beyond the Asylum

Beyond the Asylum PDF Author: Claire E. Edington
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 150173394X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
This book is a must-read for any specialist in the history of colonial and post-colonial psychiatry, as well as a fantastic case study for those interested in the social history of European colonialism more generally.― Choice Claire Edington's fascinating look at psychiatric care in French colonial Vietnam challenges our notion of the colonial asylum as a closed setting, run by experts with unchallenged authority, from which patients rarely left. She shows instead a society in which Vietnamese communities and families actively participated in psychiatric decision-making in ways that strengthened the power of the colonial state, even as they also forced French experts to engage with local understandings of, and practices around, insanity. Beyond the Asylum reveals how psychiatrists, colonial authorities, and the Vietnamese public debated both what it meant to be abnormal, as well as normal enough to return to social life, throughout the early twentieth century. Straddling the fields of colonial history, Southeast Asian studies and the history of medicine, Beyond the Asylum shifts our perspective from the institution itself to its relationship with the world beyond its walls. This world included not only psychiatrists and their patients, but also prosecutors and parents, neighbors and spirit mediums, as well as the police and local press. How each group interacted with the mentally ill, with each other, and sometimes in opposition to each other, helped decide the fate of those both in and outside the colonial asylum.

New Insights Into the Provision of Health Services in Indonesia

New Insights Into the Provision of Health Services in Indonesia PDF Author:
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 0821382993
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
Over the past decade, Indonesia has implemented significant health sector reforms that include decentralizing responsibilities for service delivery, designing incentives for health providers, increasing the supply of midwives in remote areas, and analyzing demographic and epidemiological transitions causing changes in the patterns of disease prevalence. Financial protection against catastrophic expenditures has improved substantially, and legislation has been enacted to improve the quality of physician training and patient care.Despite the progress, substantial challenges remain and include comparatively low resources for the health sector, limitations in the supply of providers at the primary and hospital levels, inefficient payment systems, shortcomings in the quality of maternal and child and adult care, lack of oversight and effective licensing in an expanding private health sector, and ineffective planning for and recruitment and retention of health workers.Given the slow pace in improving health outcomes and limited evidence linking health performance and the health workforce, the need to make more information available about past experiences to inform future policy changes is pressing. Few studies have been undertaken to measure the actual impact of the reforms and the remaining challenges. 'New Insights into the Provision of Health Services in Indonesia: A Health Workforce Study' begins the process, providing real time evidence-based inputs to facilitate the Government of Indonesia's comprehensive health sector review. The authors' analysis of panel data from households and health providers will assist the government's assessment of the impact of past health work force policies and its consideration of policy changes.

Military Medicine to Win Hearts and Minds

Military Medicine to Win Hearts and Minds PDF Author: Robert J. Wilensky
Publisher: Texas Tech University Press
ISBN: 9780896725324
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
"Most important, there is no evidence that the good will built by U.S. doctors transferred to the South Vietnamese forces, and in fact the opposite may have been true: American programs may have emphasized the inability of the South Vietnamese government to provide basic health care to its own people. Furthermore, the programs may have demonstrated to Vietnamese civilians that foreign soldiers cared more for them than their own troops did. If that is the case, the programs actually did more harm than good in the attempt to win hearts and minds."--BOOK JACKET.

From Mayo Clinic to Vietnam

From Mayo Clinic to Vietnam PDF Author: James V. Donadio, Jr.
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780692885468
Category : Nephrology
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Dr. James V. Donadio Jr. was fresh out of his medical residency training in 1966 when he was drafted into the United States Army Medical Corps and sent to Vietnam to supervise a renal (kidney) unit at the 3rd Field Hospital near Saigon. In From the Military Draft to Vietnam: Memoirs of a Physician Serving in the War, Dr. Donadio looks back at his year of treating American soldiers wounded on the battlefield. During his service there, he also cared for Vietnamese civilians in outpatient clinics and Vietnamese children in nearby orphanages. Dr. Donadio found the unique medical practice in the war zone to be both challenging and rewarding, but leaving behind his wife and four children for a year was painful and required extra mental effort on his part to push ahead and attend to his medical responsibilities. His faith also helped him during his time there, and he was honored to serve as Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman's attending physician during the Cardinal's Christmas 1966 tour of the combat zone. Dr. Donadio's memoirs included both his recollections of these experiences backed by a vast assembly of documentary sources.

Ru

Ru PDF Author: Kim Thúy
Publisher: Random House Canada
ISBN: 0307359727
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
A runaway bestseller in Quebec, with foreign rights sold to 15 countries around the world, Kim Thúy's Governor General's Literary Award-winning Ru is a lullaby for Vietnam and a love letter to a new homeland. Ru. In Vietnamese it means lullaby; in French it is a small stream, but also signifies a flow - of tears, blood, money. Kim Thúy's Ru is literature at its most crystalline: the flow of a life on the tides of unrest and on to more peaceful waters. In vignettes of exquisite clarity, sharp observation and sly wit, we are carried along on an unforgettable journey from a palatial residence in Saigon to a crowded and muddy Malaysian refugee camp, and onward to a new life in Quebec. There, the young girl feels the embrace of a new community, and revels in the chance to be part of the American Dream. As an adult, the waters become rough again: now a mother of two sons, she must learn to shape her love around the younger boy's autism. Moving seamlessly from past to present, from history to memory and back again, Ru is a book that celebrates life in all its wonder: its moments of beauty and sensuality, brutality and sorrow, comfort and comedy.
