The sample for this study was 26 elementary schools, 439 teachers, and nearly 11,000 students. An analysis of professional learning communities and student achievement data through hierarchical linear modeling indicated that each of the eight clearly defined elements of professional learning communities have a significant relationship with student achievement.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between school culture, teacher perceptions of professional learning community (PLC) implementation, and student achievement in elementary schools in a large school district in South Carolina. The theoretical framework for this study (the School Culture Survey [SCS] and Professional Learning Community Assessment-Revised [PLCA-R] survey instruments) were utilized along with interviews to collect data. Two elementary schools were studied, and a total of nine survey responses were collected. In order to further describe the survey data, 11 interviews were conducted. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze data. Due to the limited responses, this study has no statistical significance, but trends were visible between the two schools studied. Based on the results, the researcher recommends that this study be replicated with additional schools within the district. The researcher also recommends that schools administer the SCS to schools to identify the culture of schools and areas for improvement first. Then, it is recommended that ongoing professional learning opportunities be offered on the benefits and expectations of PLCs.

The purpose of this case study was to document teacher perceptions of how components of professional learning communities create a collaborative environment for teacher lesson sharing and improve lesson preparation to increase student achievement. Components of professional learning communities includes collaboration time with colleagues to (a) analyze student achievement data, (b) create data-driven lesson plans, (c) create SMART goals to monitor student achievement, and (d) provide time for reflection of practice. The case study utilized qualitative methodology by using a teacher survey instrument adapted from the professional learning community work of DuFour and Eaker (1998), and integrated the survey results with school site achievement data. The study found that student achievement increased 20 points in adequate yearly progress (A YP) in a school considered a low performing site. Cause-and-effect relationship was not the purpose of this study and the researcher realizes the many factors that impact and influence student achievement. However, when teachers believe that weekly time set aside for collaboration within their professional learning community provides time for lesson planning and leads to improved student achievement scores, then perhaps we have discovered something of value for this one particular school. The implications of this case study are unique to the school site and may expand professional learning communities district- Professional Learning Communities ii wide to support teacher collaboration and lesson plans sharing to close the achievement gap. The focus of this research was to examine the professional learning of school instructional and administrative staff as they focused on the elements of becoming a professional learning community. Existing research examined the components and behaviors collectively or independently. This research describes the relational data between the critical elements of focus, the leader, teams, and individual teacher as related to student achievement. The study was to determine the impact of a Professional Learning Community on student achievement as measured by the state's criterion referenced reading and mathematics achievement tests. Data for this study were extracted from the school district's student database. Two cohorts of 90 students each were randomly selected from a population of approximately 600 students in 3 schools that participated in a Professional Learning Community (treatment) and 3 schools that did not (control). Professional Learning Communities known as PLCs, can serve as a major theoretical framework to promote the improvement of classroom teachers' instructional practice, teacher effectiveness and student achievement. Reading and mathemtics mean scale scores were extracted at three time points (year 1, year 2, and year 3) across three grades (grade 3, grade 4 and grade 5). Test for equality of variance found that no statistically significant difference existed between the mean scale scores of the two cohorts at the beginning of the study. The findings revealed that both cohorts trend toward increased academic achievement from year to year individually; however, when compared to each other, no statistically significant difference existed. Further research is indicated to examine each PLC for implementation, support and leadership as they relate to the PLC and a focus on instruction and learning.
