CRC Handbook of Avian Body Masses

CRC Handbook of Avian Body Masses PDF Author: John B. Dunning, Jr.
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849342585
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
Body mass, or weight, is the most useful descriptive measure of relative body size in birds. Masses are usually reported in avian studies of comparative ecology, physiology, breeding biology, and zoology. In addition, adult body mass is a vital statistic for studies of allometric relationships, growth and development, flight, and biometrics. The data in this handbook was compiled to provide a ready reference source for body masses of most of the world's species of birds. Masses of over 5,800 species are presented, representing about 65% of the known birds. Information for each species includes, when available, the mean, standard deviation, range, sample size, collecting locale and season, and original source. Separate means are presented for males and females in sexually dimorphic species. This handbook should greatly improve the ability of avian researchers to quickly locate body masses for most bird species and incorporate this data into research. Airplane design engineers and airport management professionals can also use these data to calculate the damage done by various species of birds when they hit aircraft. Avid birders, members of birding organizations, and bird banders will also find the book useful for their activities.

The Cuckoos

The Cuckoos PDF Author: Robert B. Payne
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 9780191513558
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 644

Book Description
The cuckoos are the most variable birds in social behavior and parental care: a few cuckoos are among the most social of all birds and rear their young in a common nest; most cuckoos are caring parents that rear their own young with some females laying a few eggs in the nests of others; while many cuckoo species are brood parasites who leave their eggs in the nests of other birds to rear, with their young maturing to kill their foster nestmates. In The Cuckoos, Robert B. Payne presents a new evolutionary history of the family based on molecular genetics, and uses the family tree to explore the origins and diversity of their behaviour. He traces details of the cuckoos' biology to their original sources, includes descriptions of previously unpublished field observations, and reveals new comparisons of songs showing previously overlooked cuckoo species. Lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned colour plates and numerous maps, halftones, and line drawings, The Cuckoos provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date account of this family yet available.

Wrens, Dippers and Thrashers

Wrens, Dippers and Thrashers PDF Author: David Brewer
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1408135523
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive guide to these closely related families. The book covers all 75 wrens, 34 thrashers and 5 dippers, almost all of which are New World species. The wrens (Troglodytidae) in particular display great diversity, occupying almost every kind of habitat in the Americas. The family probably originates in Central America where the greatest number of species is to be found. The thrashers (Mimidae) include the mockingbirds, catbirds and tremblers. The dippers (Cinclidae) are river specialists although, unusually, they exhibit no obvious features for an aquatic existence.
