And they have glorious ly won the prize. There are historians, and biographers, and mathematicians, and painters, and sculptors, and poets, and divines, who have been content for years to live on hopes, nourished in their own bosoms, or whispered only by the gen tle spirit of private friendship, while they have been toiling for immortality. Meanwhile the press has rung its merry peals throughout the continent, for the favorites of the day. And where are these favorites now? They have perished, and their very names have died away, like the memory of an echo. There is a fine remark of Lord Bacon, * that He, that seeketh to be eminent among able men, hath a great task but that is ever good for the public.
