Book Description
Excerpt from A Dictionary of Terms Used in Printing A printed page, an engraving, or a bank note may be exactly copied by this invention. Moisten the printed paper with dilute phosphoric acid, lay it face downwards on a clean sheet of Zinc, and put it in a press for a short time. The acid of the unprinted part etches the zinc beneath, while the printed part sets off on the zinc, and thus produces a reverse copy of the printing. Wash the plate with an acid solution of gum, and it will be ready for use. The plate may now be treated as the stone in Lithographic Printing first damped, and then rolled. The affinity of the ink to the letters already set off on the plate, and the repulsion of the other parts of the plate, cause the lines of the device to take the ink, but the other parts remain clean, the printing then follows. American Dictionary of Printing and Bookmaking

American Dictionary of Printing and Bookmaking PDF Author: Wesley Washington Pasko

Book Description
Excerpt from American Dictionary of Printing and Bookmaking: Containing a History of These Arts in Europe and America, With Definitions of Technical Terms and Biographical Sketches Much space has been given to historical and biographical matter. Begin ning with the invention of the art, the changes and improvements in each line down to the present day have been told. Part of this is given under countries and cities; part under machines or new processes; but a very large part under biographical not-ices. The latter have been illustrated wherever practicable. The biographies of people who have lived or are now living in the United States are particularly numerous. They include the officers of the Typothetae and the presidents of the International Union, besides the most prominent inventors, type-founders and printing-machine makers, with a multitude of others who have attained distinction in some one of the arts. Not one has been inserted for personal reasons. When the plan of this dictionary was submitted by W. W. Pasko to the late Howard Lockwood it was considered by the latter for a long time. This was his custom. He decided no important question in haste. Nothing was said for years, but when the firm finally decided to enter upon its publication it was warmly taken up. An agreement was made with Mr. Pasko to prepare the work and carry it to completion within four years. Mr. Lockwood scrutinized all of the proofs, and entered into all details with great interest. When, in October, 1892, it reached the letter L he was urged to allow a sketch of himself to be prepared and used. He shrunk from this, with the modesty inherent in his nature, but finally consented. A brief notice was made ready and given to him, that it might be revised as to dates and names. He did not return it. Presently all the type in the font was set up, leaving a gap under Lo. Work ceased. Thus it stood when his sudden death came. The bit of copy which had not been returned was never found; the article about him now in the book was afterwards written, and the work proceeded. Much obligation must be expressed to Theodore Low De Vinne, the great printer, for his kindly assistance, his indication of authorities, his decision of knotty quest-ions, his loan of illustrations, and his permission to borrow freely from his two principal books, the Invention of Printing and the Printers' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Printer's Dictionary of Technical Terms: A Handbook of Definitions and Information About Processes of Printing, With a Brief Glossary of Terms Used in Book Binding The following pages have been, in course of preparation for several years. Originally some of the matter was intended solely as "copy" for practice in type-setting by pupils in the School of Printing; later it was arranged, roughly, into the form of a brief glossary, and then, as its value for practice-work, instruction, and general trade information became apparent, it was gradually put into the form in which it now appears. The book is the product of some seventy-five or eighty young printers, who have left on its pages the impress of their first struggles to attain a mastery of their chosen vocation. Every page represents hours of patient, earnest work on the part of pupils who were receiving their first lessons in putting hastily prepared copy into typographic form. In its compilation no especial researches have been undertaken, reliance being mainly on the ordinary sources of information, i.e., trade journals, technical works, and general dictionaries and encyclopedias, and on personal experience and observation. Considering the manner in which it has been produced, no apology need be offered for its obvious defects and shortcomings. The aim has been to compile rudimentary information for the young printer, and no attempt has been made to cover the subjects exhaustively or to make a cyclopedia of complete information. Book Description
Excerpt from Technical Terms: Used in Bibliographies and by the Book and Printing Trades The present publication forms part of a more extensive unpublished piece of work undertaken a number of years ago, and will now serve as a supplement to F. K. Walter's "Abbreviations and Technical Terms used in Book Catalogues and Bibliographies," published in Boston in 1912. The original manuscript was planned somewhat differently, and included library terms, now published separately. Changes in the arrangement were made necessary in order to make it uniform with the work it now supplements. Terms already in Mr. Walter's work, are, with a few exceptions, omitted here. In the compilation numerous works on bibliography, printing, and binding have been consulted, as well as periodicals relating to these subjects. Several foreign librarians have given me their kind assistance in cases where I was unable to find the terms. Thus a number of Dutch terms were supplied by Dr. H. Greve and Mr. R. van der Meulen, Italian by Dr. Eugenio Rossi, Spanish by Mrs. Figarola Caneda, and Swedish by Dr. Isak Collijn. Book Description
Excerpt from The Printers Vocabulary: A Collection of Some 2500 Technical Terms, Phrases, Abbreviations and Other Expressions Mostly Relating to Letterpress Printing, Many of Which Have Been in Use Since the Time of Caxton My little volume of last year, "The Printers' Handbook of Trade Recipes, etc.," having met with a greater success than I had anticipated, I venture to offer the accompanying work as a small addition to our literature on Printing, trusting that it may be found useful for reference purposes, and especially so to those workers who are desirous of becoming acquainted with the terms, phrases, etc., used in the departments other than those they are employed in - the increasing tendency nowadays to subdivision of labour making it a somewhat difficult matter to acquire the expressions of the other branches of the trade. It may also be of service to publishers, authors, and others connected directly or indirectly with our craft, in making more clear the detail necessary between customer and tradesman. I trust due allowance will be. made for any possible difference of opinion in expressing the many brief definitions here attempted - circumstances and locality sometimes allowing of a slightly different construction - though, in the main, the same explanation. Dictionary of Americanisms

Dictionary of Americanisms PDF Author: John Russell Bartlett

Book Description
Excerpt from Dictionary of Americanisms: A Glossary of Words and Phrases Usually Regarded as Peculiar the United States The first edition of this Dictionary was published in New York in 1848. It met with a quick sale, and soon passed out of print. Aware of its many imperfections, I began my preparations for a new edition before it had fully left the press. From that time to the day the last sheets of this edition left my hands for the printer, now ten years, I have been more or less occupied in its preparation. Nearly three years of this period I spent in the interior of the country, in the service of the United States as Commissioner on the Mexican Boundary; but even there, I failed not to note the peculiarities of the familiar language of the frontier, and carefully recorded the words and phrases I met with for future use. This experience enabled me to collect the singular words occurring in prairie and frontier life as well as those com mon to Texas, New Mexico, and California. Most of these have come from the Spanish, and are now fairly engrafted on our language. The other alterations and improvements made in this edition, consist in the addition of a very large number Of words and phrases peculiar to the United States; so that it now contains probably twice as many as the first edition. The examples or illustrations from authors, showing the use of words, have also been greatly multiplied. This seemed desirable, as exam ples convey a far more correct idea of their meaning and use than a simple definition. The. Histories of words and their definitions have also been corrected and improved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Abbreviations and Technical Terms: Used in Book Catalogs and Bibliographies Several considerations, among them the expense of biblio graphic publications, have prevented any considerable changes in content or scope. This is still a tentative preliminary list based, both as to inclusion and exclusion, on observation of the difficulties most frequently met in the use of ordinary trade bibliographies. It can, consequently, claim neither well-balanced proportion, entire consistency nor completeness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
