Historical Dictionary of the Syrian Uprising and Civil War

Historical Dictionary of the Syrian Uprising and Civil War PDF Author: Asaad Alsaleh
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 153812078X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 441

Book Description
Historical Dictionary of the Syrian Uprising and Civil War introduces readers to the events and main players that shaped the conflict in Syria since 15 March 2011, as the country entered a new era in its modern history. The “Syrian Revolution,” was part of the Arab Spring that was launched in Tunisia, Egypt, and other countries in the Middle East in late 2010. The Syrian situation turned into a winter, which merits such an all-encompassing book that reveals the complex dynamics of the Syrian civil war. Many of the key players, places, and unfolding events were making headlines for a short period before vanishing from memory, but this book records their emergence and influence. The book traces the political opposition, initially in the form of street-level unrest, targeting the rule of the al-Asad family that ruled for over five decades. The book provides a picture of the fighting groups and their varying agendas, including the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other extremist groups. It depicts a picture of a country whose civil war caused one of the biggest crises in the 21st century. It contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 200 cross-referenced entries on the major events, places, and actors in the Syrian war. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Syrian uprising.

Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
In Syrian Arabic Voices, you will meet Amani, Umran, Nada, Fares, Bayan, and Rami, all Syrians in diaspora, who share their personal stories of war and emigration, along with more lighthearted topics such as self-introductions, hobbies, and fond memories. Syrian Arabic Voices is designed to provide intermediate and advanced students of Arabic with an opportunity to hear and study authentic Levantine Arabic as it is spoken by native speakers today. Unlike the scripted materials read by voice actors used in many course books, Syrian Arabic Voices offers dozens of audio essays spoken naturally and off-the-cuff by individuals from around Syria. Each of the six native speakers has contributed audio essays that have then been transcribed (as voweled Arabic text) and translated for study. Each segment (audio essay chapter) contains: 1) accompanying audio tracks available for free download at www.lingualism.com/sav. 2) vocabulary and comprehension exercises to sharpen your listening skills and increase how much you can understand 3) in-chapter answers to the exercises (no having to flip back and forth to the back of the book) 4) verbatim transcripts of the audio with side-by-side English translations. 5) lined sections for taking notes and recording new vocabulary.

A Reference Grammar of Syrian Arabic with Audio CD PDF Author: Mark W. Cowell
Publisher: Georgetown University Press
ISBN: 9781589010512
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 622

Book Description
This important reissue, enhanced with an audio CD to supplement the first chapter of the text (sounds), is another addition to Georgetown's world-renowned Arabic language-learning materials and is considered to be one of the most outstanding descriptions of any Arabic dialect written for the English-speaking world. It is comprehensive in its coverage--ranging from phonology (how sounds are organized and used) to morphology (sound, syllable, and word structure), with an analysis that is insightful and original. It contains hints on how to master nuances in dialectical pronunciation, as well as the differences of meaning in their various forms. Based on the dialect of Damascus, the language covered here is part of what has variously been called "Syrian Arabic," "Eastern Arabic," and "Levantine Arabic," encompassing the dialects of Beirut, Amman, and Jerusalem--as well as Damascus--with references made to regional variants. In a world drawn ever closer to events in the Middle East, this comprehensive grammar reference is yet another extraordinary addition to the growing library of Arabic language-learning materials published by Georgetown University Press.

Atlas of the Arabic Dialects of Galilee (Israel)

Atlas of the Arabic Dialects of Galilee (Israel) PDF Author: Peter Behnstedt
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004411399
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 478

Book Description
This atlas is based on large-scale fieldwork conducted in Galilee in the mid-nineties of last century. Galilee is the area with the highest percentage of arabophones in Israel and displays a rather complex dialectal situation. The reshuffling of large parts of the population after 1948 led to a considerable degree of dialectal diversity in many places. Moreover, many points of investigation show, besides the notorious Bedouin-sedentary dichotomy, a significant sociolinguistic variation with respect to age, sex, and denomination. The atlas contains seventy-three phonetic and phonologial maps, in addition to eighty morphological and thirty-eight lexical maps.Ten maps deal with the classification of the dialects. The atlas is of interest to semitists, dialectologists and variationists.
