Book Description
From Aeneas Tacitus to Zhukov, this is the most comprehensive dictionary of military history and military science to have been published. It covers those people, battles and campaigns, wars, countries, institutions and weapons that have fundamentally affected the nature and development of warfare. It also has a particular concern with civil-military relations and the role of armed forces in society. From the Hellenic period to the present day, including the questions of chemical and biological weaponry raised in the conflict with Iraq, the dictionary has comprehensive coverage of military history for students, scholars, specialists and general readers alike. Originally published in French under the title Dictionnaire d'Art et d'Histoire Militaires, the new English language edition is expanded and completely revised and updated. All entries now carry full lists of recommended reading, and bibliographies have been thoroughly updated to include the latest literature. Many bibliographical entries have been added, as well as accounts of individual campaigns and battles. A main feature of the book is its broad thematic entries on such topics as naval and air warfare, as well as strategy, ballistics and other specialized topics.

Historical Dictionary of the Russian Civil Wars, 1916-1926

Historical Dictionary of the Russian Civil Wars, 1916-1926 PDF Author: Jonathan D. Smele
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1442252812
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1471

Book Description
This book is a detailed reference of the twentieth century struggles that were waged across and beyond the decaying Russian Empire at the end of the First World War, as tsarism and democratic alternatives to it collapsed and the world’s first Communist state, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was born. At the same time, it is a necessary corrective to studies that have viewed events of the time as a unitary “Russian Civil War” that sprang from the Russian Revolution of 1917. Instead, it contributes to the ongoing process of integrating the civil wars into a “continuum of crises” that wracked the Russian Empire and its would-be successor states across a prolonged period. The Historical Dictionary of the Russian Civil Wars, 1916-1926 covers the history of this period through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has almost 2,000 cross-referenced entries on individuals, political and governmental institutions and political parties, and military formations and concepts, as well as religion, art, film, propaganda, uniforms, and weaponry. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Russian Civil War.

Armies and Societies in Europe, 1494-1789

Armies and Societies in Europe, 1494-1789 PDF Author: André Corvisier
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
" In an outstanding work of synthesis based on many years of research, one of France's leading military historians examines European military history within the perspective of social and economic change. Corvisier's work demonstrates the close and complex relationship between a society and its army. Just as European society changed greatly between 1494 and 1789, a fundamental change took place in the role of the military. During the ancient regime, the professional use of arms evolved from a private to a public institution and the military became the essential instrument of state power. As Corvisier shows, warfare- long the sole preserve of the nobility- soon transcended the interests of a single class. He concludes that a military mentality was more pervasive in early modern Europe than has been assumed. Part One examines the relationship between the developing states of Europe and their armies, from early medieval baronial bands to the government- controlled national instruments of the eighteenth century. Parts Two and Three deal with the evolution of army organization and administration, civilian attitudes, and social relationships within the armies. The author analyzes data from the various countries of Europe over a period of three centuries, thus making this work chronologically and geopraphically comprehensive." -Publisher.

The Mattis Way of War

The Mattis Way of War PDF Author: United States Army Command and General S

Pages : 98

Book Description
This thesis examines the generalship, leadership, and operational art of General James N. Mattis, US Marine Corps by using Task Force 58 in Afghanistan as a formative base and then comparing elements of operational art to the conduct of the 1st Marine Division in Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003. Mattis draws upon many historical influences that shape his operational design in both campaigns. He puts great effort and focus on ensuring that his commander's intent is understood by all his subordinates and uses a preference for a small staff in the planning and execution of his intent. He makes heavy use of personally selected liaison officers to form and sustain habitual relationships with higher and adjacent units. Through the use of historical examples and a refusal to be constrained by doctrine and popular thought he uses innovative approaches in his design. These innovative approaches often constitute paradigm shifts with contemporary thought and doctrine. A 'Mattis Way of War' is postulated in the conclusion which draws from his use of history, commander's intent, and leadership to build up a capacity, or potential energy, for action in his unit. Once built up, he unleashes this energy utilizing explicit trust in his staff and subordinates.
