Book Description
Excerpt from A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography, Vol. 1 of 2: Abacaenum-Hytanis Separate articles are given to the geographical names which occur in the chief classical authors, as well as to those which are found in the Geogre phera and Itineraries, wherever the latter are of importance in consequence of their connection with more celebrated names, or of their representing modern towns, or from other causes. But it has been considered worse than useless to load the work with a barren list of names, many of xthem corrupt, and of which absolutely nothing is known. The reader, however, is not to conclude that a name is altogether omitted till he has consulted the Index; since in some cases an account is given, under other articles, of names which did not deserve a separate notice. Book Description
Excerpt from Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography, Vol. 2 of 2: Iabadius-Zymethus It is not remarkable that the Greeks should have had but little knowledge of India or its inhabitants till a comparatively late period of their history, and that neither Homer nor Pindar, nor the great Greek dramatists Sophocles and Euripides, should mention by its name either India or any of its people. It is pro bable that, at this early period, neither commerce nor any other cause had led the Greeks beyond the shores of Syria eastward, and that it was not till the Persian wars that the existence of vast and populous regions to the E. Of Persia itself became distinctly known to them. Some individual names may have reached the ears of those who inquired; perhaps some indi vidual travellers may have heard of these far distant reshna; such, for instance, as the physician De mocedes, when residing at the court of Dareius, the son of Hystaspes (llerod. Iii. And Democritus of Abdera (a. 0. 460 who is said by several authors to have travelled to Egypt, Persia, Aethio pin, and India (diog. Laiirt. Ix. 72; Strab. Xvi. P. 703; Clem. Strom. I. P. 304; Suidae, e. Yet little was probably known beyond a few names. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography, Vol. 1 of 2: Abacaenum-Hytanis Tm; present work completes the Series of Classical Dictionaries, and forms, with the Dictionaries of Greek and Roman Antiquities and Greek and Roman Biography already published, an Encyclopedia of Classical Antiquity. The Dictionary of Geography, like the other two works, is designed mainly to illustrate the Greek and Roman writers, and to enable a diligent student to read them in the most profitable manner; but it has been thought advisable to include the geographical names which occur in the Sacred Scriptures, and thus to make the work a Dictionary of Ancient Geography in the widest acceptation of the term. The name Greek and Roman has however been retained, partly for the sake of uniformity, but chiefly to indicate the principal object of the work.
