People have applied organochlorine insecticides to bats or their roosts, or both, to study the effects on the bats, to kill them, or kill pest insects. Studies of effects have shown that DDT and dieldrin are more toxic to bats than other organochlorines. They have also shown that DDT usually reduces colony size temporarily but that it rarely exterminates a colony. Application of DDT usually results in dead or dying bats lying outside the roost site, thus increasing the likelihood that people or pets will be bitten.

The proposed Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) action will involve moving the Chemical and Military Police schools from Fort McClellan Alabama to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The Environmental Impact Statement (HBA 1996), addresses impacts of this action on the human environment. A major component of the BRAC action involves introduction of obscurant and simulant training to the Fort Leonard Wood environment. Military uses for obscurants (smoke) include screening, deception, and identification of equipment, facilities, and troops (Shinn et al. 1987). Training simulants are used by the military to instruct soldiers in recognition of dangerous, hazardous or toxic chemicals used by enemy forces in chemical and biological warfare. Two federally endangered species, the Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) and the gray bat (Myotis grisescens), and one threatened species, the bald eagle (Hallaeetus leucocephalus) occur on Fort Leonard Wood. We performed this Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) to comply with the Endangered Species Act, and in support of the BRAC Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This report is an appendix to the Biological Assessment (BA) for Relocation of U.S. Army Chemical School and U.S. Army Military Police School to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The ERA focuses on potential contaminants generated by Chemical and Military Police School training. Risks to endangered and threatened species estimated herein were based on either modeled or estimated exposure concentrations and literature-based toxicity values. Risks were used to determine direct effects to the species of concern. Indirect effects were addressed qualitatively. We assessed effects to adults, juveniles, and other life stages of the Indiana bat, gray bat, and bald eagle.

Migration is an important and understudied aspect of the life histories of many species, particularly bats. Migration impacts conservation efforts, including efforts to manage the impacts of wildlife disease. The federally endangered gray bat (Myotis grisescens) is a migratory species with documented infections by Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the fungus that causes White-nose Syndrome (WNS). To better understand migration as it might relate to WNS, I quantified the timing and location of gray bat movements in Missouri using acoustic detectors and bat banding. I recorded calls at 4 maternity sites from January to May 2015, and used the R package PVAClone to generate estimates of r and K as measures of arrival rate and an index of population size at the maternity sites respectively. These values were plotted against each cave’s distance from a major hibernaculum to examine whether there was an effect on the arrival of gray bats at a site. Values of r varied between 0.3 and 0.9, and values of K varied between 981 and 3020 among the maternity roosts: estimates were consistent whether considering observation error or not. While bats arrived at the closest maternity colony quicker and in greater numbers, the remaining rates and indices were equivocal with distance. Over 1,000 gray bats were banded and 18 were relocated, revealing previously undocumented connections between gray bat caves across the region. The acoustic methodology used in this thesis could be useful for management officials wanting to monitor the timing of bat migration and site activity, both of which could be affected by WNS. The cave network used by gray bats in Missouri could yield insight into how WNS spreads across cave networks.
