The data for this field project was taken from the school social worker's records. Data collected showed that there were 3,395 secondary school dropouts in Dougherty County schools during 1975-1980. Indifference was the single most significant reason for leaving schools. More blacks than whites dropped out. Data showed more black males dropping out that any other single group. White females composed the least number of dropouts.

The purpose of this study was to find the major causes of dropouts in grades seven through twelve in the Dougherty County, Georgia, school system during the years 1970-1977.Data were completed from the visiting teachers’ records and compiled by month and by year. The data collected showed that during the school years 1970-1977 there were 4,092 students who dropped out of school before finishing the twelfth grade. The data also showed there were more males dropping out than females, with very little difference between the number of black and white dropouts. Indifference was the major cause of students dropping out of school. This one cause accounted for 58.5% of the total number of dropouts.
