A Cross-cultural Perspective of the Perception of Color as it Relates to Affect
The Diversity of Color

Pages : 44
Book Description
Does a person's perception of color symbolism depend on their cultural geographic origin? As color is often connected to different cultural elements, this study is intended as a contribution to advancing cross-cultural understanding in a globalizing world. The hypothesis states that the color perceived to be symbolic of various life events such as weddings, births, and deaths as well as emotions such s happiness or sadness, will vary based on a person's cultural geographic origin. Using eleven basic color terms as determined by Berlin and Kay (196), subjects' perceptions of color symbolism was explored through responses to an online survey shared with a global convenicence sample. The findins have shown a dependence on the construct to which color symbolism is being attributed. Data was found to both support and refute this hypothesis. In the constructs of contempt, disgust, happiness, birth and wealth, the hypothesis was supported while it was refuted through the data collected for anger, sadness, fear, surprise, death, weddings, divorce, poverty, work education.

A Cross-cultural Investigation of the Cognitive Salience of Perceptual Color Dimensions
Author: Prutha S. Deshpande

Book Description
Of the three perceptual color dimensions—lightness, saturation, and hue—most theories of color naming emphasize hue. Several languages containing “wildcard” categories that appear to be unrelated to hue and instead based on the dimensions of lightness and/or saturation have however been identified. Here we explore the possibility that wildcard categories are linked to fundamental differences in the cognitive salience of the perceptual color dimensions of hue, lightness and/or saturation across cultures. While this idea has been previously suggested by other researchers, it has yet to be empirically tested. Here we do so by comparing speakers of languages with vastly different color naming systems, the latter of which may have a wildcard category: English and Somali. In Experiment 1, we examine whether there are cross-cultural differences in the cognitive salience of hue vs. lightness/saturation in judgments of color similarity, where in each judgment, a standard color is compared to a color of the same hue or the same lightness/saturation (luminance). We test whether lightness/saturation-based similarity judgments are associated with the presence of a wildcard color category in color naming. In Experiment 2, we ensure that similarity judgments in Experiment 1 were not based on the discriminability of colors. Finally, in Experiment 3, we examine whether there are cross-cultural differences in judgments of color similarity when colors only vary along the hue dimension and are approximately equally discriminable from each other, thus testing for categorical effects in color perception. In both Experiment 1 and 3 we do not find any differences in the similarity judgments of English and Somali speakers despite the many differences in color naming. This indicates that there are no cross-cultural differences in the salience of hue vs. lightness/saturation, and that color naming does not influence judgments of color similarity. We conclude that the representation of color guiding the two processes of judgments of color similarity and color naming may differ.

Cultural Psychology
Author: Carl Ratner
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 1135602433
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
Carl Ratner's new book deepens our understanding of psychology by emphasizing the role that cultural factors, such as social institutions, artifacts, and cultural concepts play in psychological functioning. The author demonstrates the impact of culture on stimulating and structuring emotion, personality, perception, cognition, memory, sexuality, and mental illness. Examples from interdisciplinary social science research illuminate a sophisticated dialectical relationship between cultural factors and psychological phenomena. Written in an engaging style, the book articulates a new theory, "macro cultural psychology", and a qualitative methodology for investigating the cultural origins, characteristics, and functions of psychological phenomena. Ratner explains how this cultural perspective can be used to enhance psychological growth, illuminate directions for social reform, and how social reform can enhance psychological functioning, and vice versa. Cultural Psychology critically examines several prominent psychological approaches including social constructionism, feminism, hermeneutics, psychobiology, evolutionary, cross-cultural, ecological, and mainstream psychology. The book articulates a theory of macro culture that emphasizes the political dimension of culture and psychology. Intended for students, researchers, and practitioners in psychology, education, psychotherapy, history, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, philosophy, and policy makers and practitioners in public health and social service who are interested in understanding cultural aspects of psychology. The book is an appropriate text for courses in cross-cultural or community psychology, social work, social theory, and critical thinking.
