Book Description
Excerpt from A Counsel of Perfection Yet this unhappy indifference and slight obliquity of vision had not interfered very sensibly with Dr. Casteen's worldly prosperity. Would not have interfered with it at all, but rather tended to promote it in a practical and conspicuous manner, had it not been for a certain fineness of fibre which the man did, after all, possess. For he regarded his work as an end, not as a means; and was really too honestly 'and honourably in love with his historic labours to give much thought to the wages which the public or the Church might be willing to pay him for them. The Life of the Counsels

The Life of the Counsels PDF Author: C. S. H.
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331655841
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of the Counsels: Short Instructions on Evangelical Perfection Of Religion is, for all Catholics, removed from the arena of controversy, by the im primatur which has been generally accorded to it by the universal Church, and by her legislating for those called to its observance; whilst, at the same time, the relation in which that phase of the regenerate life stands towards the Episcopate is as clearly set forth in the Canons of Chalcedon. Written as these Letters have been at the desire of the Author's spiritual guide, his commendation would have, perhaps, been their more fitting introduction, and must in any case have carried more weight with English Catholics than any words of mine; but I have been asked to write a brief Preface, and shall be thankful if by complying with the request I may in the least degree further a faithful effort to help. The Scale (or Ladder) Of Perfection (Classic Reprint)

The Scale (or Ladder) Of Perfection (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Walter Hilton
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330909478
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
Excerpt from The Scale (or Ladder) Of Perfection Of all the old English ascetical works which were extant before the Reformation none have maintained their reputation longer than Walter Hilton's "Scale of Perfection." Hilton was a canon of Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire, and died in 1395. His "Scale of Perfection" is found in no less than five MSS. in the British Museum alone. Wynkyn de Worde printed it at least three times - in the years 1494, 1519 and 1525. Many other editions were printed at the same period. After the Reformation it was a favourite book of Father Augustine Baker's, the well-known author of "Sancta Sophia," and his comments on it are among his MSS. at Downside. In 1659 Father Baker's biographer and editor, Dom Serenus Cressy, O.S.B., published an edition of the "Scale," the title-page of which claims that "by the changing of some antiquated words [it is] rendered more intelligible." Another edition appeared in 1672, and yet another in 1679. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Knowledge and Practice (Classic Reprint)

Knowledge and Practice (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: James Edwin Creighton
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330532355
Category : Self-Help

Pages : 26

Book Description
Excerpt from Knowledge and Practice I Wish to begin by congratulating the chapter of Phi Beta Kappa that has its home at Brown University on its long and honorable traditions, and especially on the eminent services that its members, through successive generations, have rendered to science, to education, and to public life. When I recall even a few names from that long roll of "illustrious living and noble dead" who owe their nurture and inspiration to this University and to this Society, I can appreciate the feelings with which you are assembled for your annual celebration, and am deeply sensible of the honor of being invited to address you on this occasion. The motto of the Phi Beta Kappa society, "Philosophy the pilot of life," furnishes the text for the reflections that I have to lay before you to-day. This motto suggests the famous saying of Socrates in the "Apology," that a life without criticism or examination is not a life worth living for a human being. It is this faculty of reflecting on experience, and finding its value in terms of some general principles, that differentiates the life of man from that of the lower animals. Philosophy in this sense, as reflection, or the effort to estimate the meanings and values that are involved in different experiences of life, may he said to be the essential birthright of man, and is always present in some degree in every human consciousness. A Practical Treatise Upon Christian Perfection (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: William Law

Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise Upon Christian Perfection To this it may be answered, that this is neither altogether true, nor altogether false. For to instance in charity, it is true that all peo ple may be equally charitable; if we understan by charity that habit of the mind which stands rightly disposed to all acts of charity; in this sense all peo ple may be equally charitable. But if we take charity for alum-giving, or a liberal assistance of the poor, in this sense it is false, that all people may be equally charitable.
