Book Description
Excerpt from A Conversation Between Two Laymen on the Subject and Mode of Christian Baptism and Church Communion P Let us both pledge ourselves to each other, and to Him who d1ed for 11s, that we will submit our sentiments and views to the oracles of Divine Truth, fully determined in the strength of the Lord that we will renounce every sentiment, that is not in conformity to the requirements of Christ, let it cost whatever self-denial it may. Should we finally be so happy as to enter beav en, probably we shall then see things as they are, which is the sublimest thing 1n natu1e.' We shall then receive no satisfac tion in discovering, that we permitted our mental vision to be obscured by passion or prejudice for the want of that thor ough, impartial examination which it is the duty of all to make. Surely, no satisfaction can then arise from the con sciousness that We, through sheer neglect of investigation, have thus thrown the weight of our influence, or any part'of it, into the scale of error, either in principle or practice. If we shall derive satisfaction from any thing we shall have done on earth, it will be for our having diligently and prayerfully sought for the truth and closelv adhered to it. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Baptism and Communion: Being a Reply to the Rev. John Wood's Manual on Christian Baptism, Its Mode and Subjects The following Lectures have been revised for publication at the urgent and unanimous request of the church, over which the writer has had the honor and happiness to preside as pastor during the past seven years. This request has been seconded by many beloved brethren in the Christian ministry in this province. The circumstances which led to the delivery of these lectures, were briefly these: a gracious revival of religion was experienced in this town during the spring of 1856, in the Congregational Methodist and Baptist churches. During the progress of that work, some of the converts, who were brought to know the Saviour in connection with the meetings in the Congregational church, became much interested in the subject of baptism and church communion. Book Description
Excerpt from Communion the Distinction Between Christian and Church Fellowship and Between Communion and Its Symbols; Embracing a Review of the Arguments of the Rev. Robert Hall and Rev. Baptist W. Noel in Favor of Mixed Communion It will be observed that this work takes for granted, that the views of our denomination on the subject of baptism are correct. To have pursued any other course, would have occupied too large a field. The writer has aimed, as much as possible, to narrow the controversy to the point at issue. Nothing, however, has been taken for granted, that was not freely con ceded by the most skilful opponent of our views on this subject, Robert Hall. This volume is not sent forth into the world to provoke controversy. It is written chiefly for members of our own Churches, and for those pious persons, who, convinced of the general truth of our sentiments, as to the mode and subjects of baptism, are yet troubled with scruples in regard to the Lord's Supper.
