Book Description
Excerpt from First Latin Grammar IN this short Grammar of the Latin Accidence I have endeavoured to arrange the paradigms in such a way as to give some hint of the connection between the different forms, Without departing from the traditional number and order of Declensions and Conjugations. In the arrange ment by stems I have closely followed Mr. Roby, even in the somewhat uncertain distinction between consonant and i-stems in the Third Declension pf Nouns, feeling that some division is necessary, and that his is more satisfactory than any other. Book Description
Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools This book is in the main an abridgment for school purposes of my larger Latin Grammar, but the abridgment is very unequal, some pans being reproduced with slight omissions, some parts bem g largely reduced, and others again being rewritten. Under the last head fall especially chaps. I and ii of Book I, and chap. Vi of Book II. Of the last-named chapter, part, particularly 132, contains an analysis which is, I think, new and interesting. I have added an English trans lation of the Examples in almost the whole of the Syntax. It Will be found that in some cases I have given the ordinary English equivalent, whilst in others I have aimed rather at explaining the Latin construction. Three Appendices are new, viz. Those on Metre, on Grammatical and Rhetorical terms, and on Latin authors. Some changes in arrangement have been made (e. G. As regards degrees of comparison, and Numerals) to suit ordinary usage. The Index has been made fuller than is usual m a book of this class - so full, that it may not be unimportant to observe that the book is really intended not for reference, but for study: The lists are not exhaustive, the statements of occur rence or non-occurrence of forms or expressions must not be taken too literally, but only as approximations to the truth, with especial regard to the classical authors and' usages of recognized authority in schools and many of the rarer usages are not noticed at all, but left to be picked up in the student's own reading, or obtained, when needed, from a dictionary. Book Description
Excerpt from Concise Latin Grammar The purpose of the author in preparing this book has been to provide, in as concise a form as possible, a Latin grammar which should be of equal service to the high-school pupil and to the college undergraduate. 'to meet the needs of the former the fundamental and essential facts of the language have been stated as simply as possible and have been given due prominence on an Open page. Statements of secondary importance appear in smaller type and all material that would be confusing to the beginner has been relegated to footnotes, and these have been reduced to a minimum. At the same time the scope of the book is such as to include all that is needed for translation of authors usually read in college. There is an obvious advantage to the student in using the same grammar throughout his Latin course. The needs of the student have been made the guiding principle in the treatment of the examples. These are numerous and have been taken by preference from the portions of Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil read in' secondary schools. Furthermore, they have been simplified when too difficult for ready comprehension, without, however, destroying their validity. In the matter of grammatical nomenclature a conservative attitude has been taken, but such of the new terms have been adopted as seem likely to win general acceptance. Book Description
Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges The volume now offered to the public has been pre pared in view of these facts. It 18 the result of a thor ough and complete revision of the author' 8 Latin Gram mar published in 1864. To a large extent, indeed, it is a new and independent work; yet the paradigms, rules of construction, and in general all parts intended for recitation, have been only slightly changed. The aim of the work in its present form is threefold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges: Founded on Comparative Grammar Our aim has been to prepare, within moderate com pass, a complete Latin grammar, to be used from the beginning of the study of Latin until the end of a college course. The whole has been composed from our own point of view, and is, in all essentials, a new and independent work. But we have used freely the standard authorities, as well those of the older scho lastic as of the newer critical and scientific schools. In several points, particularly the topical arrangement of the Syntax, we have followed the outline sketched a few years ago by Professor Allen, of the University of Wisconsin.
