Book Description
The purpose of this study was to determine the energy expenditure (EE) on multiple aerobic modalities in an attempt to determine which may be considered the best exercise machine. Sixteen subjects (8 male and 8 female) performed 3-5 practice sessions on each modality (treadmill (TM), power mill stepper (ST), airdyne (AD), elliptical (EL), upright bike (UB), cybex arc trainer (CY), rower (RO), recumbent stepper (RS), recumbent bike (RB), and the arm ergometer (AE)). Subjects then completed five testing sessions, each session consisted of two modalities, in random order with a 15-minute rest between each modality. For testing subjects completed 5-minute bouts at an RPE of 11, 13, and 15 on the 6-20 Borg RPE scale. The HR was recorded each minute and VO2 was measured continuously. There were significant differences in EE between the 10 modalities. Generally, the TM and ST had the highest EE compared to the other modalities, probably because they both utilize a larger muscle mass and require the exerciser to lift their body against gravity. The eight other modalities expend fewer calories, but may be possible alternatives to achieve cardiorespiratory fitness or train different muscle groups.
