Book Description
Excerpt from A Comparative Grammar of the South African Bantu Languages: Comprising Those of Zanzibar, Mozambique, the Zambezi, Kafirland, Benguela, Angola, the Congo, the Ogowe, the Cameroons, the Lake Region, Etc However favourably my friends may have thought of this work when still in manuscript, I cannot flatter myself that it comes near to the 'perfection to which I should have wished to have been 'able to bring it. Any criticisms, corrections, additions, or suggestions, will be received with hearty thanks. There is no need to call the attention of any one to the importance of the study of Bantu. Independently of its scientific interest, it is a key for opening one half of an immense continent to Christian civilization. I will only add a word of thanks to all those to whom I am indebted for help, whether from their published works in the same line as this, or from private advice and inform ation. I feel particularly indebted to the following friends: The Rev. J. T. Walford, S. J., for having very kindly looked over, and corrected, the greater part of the English of my MSS. and proofsheets. Dr. R. N. Cust, for having no less kindly given me a number of modern publications on the Bantu languages, among others most of those of the S. P. C. K. His "Sketch of the Modern Languages of Africa" has also been to me an invaluable guide throughout. The Revv. Fathers Causse, Temming, Ronchi, Andre, S. J., for information or MSS. regarding the Kafir, Chwana, Senna, and Kilimane languages, respectively. The Rev. Father Lévesque, of the Société de Notre-Dame des Missions d'Afriqiie, for having kindly sent me all the publications of his Society on the Bantu languages. Applicative Constructions in the World’s Languages

Applicative Constructions in the World’s Languages PDF Author: Fernando Zuniga
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110730952
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 1100

Book Description
This book presents a state-of-the-art cross-linguistic survey of applicative constructions in the functional-typological tradition. An introductory section sets the terminological and analytical stage, presents the methodology used by the different chapters, and provides a typological outlook. The individual contributions address the morphological, syntactic and semantic variation of applicatives, as well as their discourse-pragmatic function. They cover all major language families and some isolates that feature some illuminating version of the phenomenon, paying special attention to language-internal variation and unity. The phenomena surveyed range from those instances usually considered canonical (valency-increasing, syntactically and semantically predictable, productive, dedicated, and optional) to those occasionally understudied in descriptive works and frequently neglected in comparative studies (valency-neutral, rather unpredictable, lexicalized, syncretic, and/or obligatory).

Jesuits in Africa

Jesuits in Africa PDF Author: Festo Mkenda SJ
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004512853
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
Jesuits have been in Africa since the founding of their order, yet their history there remains poorly researched. Although scholars have begun to focus on specific regions such as Congo, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe, a comprehensive picture of the entire Jesuit experience on the continent has hitherto been lacking. In a condensed yet accessible way, Jesuits in Africa fills that lacuna. Narrating the story century by century from the time of St. Ignatius of Loyola (c.1491–1556), founder of the Jesuits, to that of Pedro Arrupe (1907–91, in office 1965–83), twenty-eighth superior general of the Society, this book makes Jesuit history in Africa available to a general readership while offering scholars a broad view in which specialized topics can be conceived and deepened.
