Book Description
‘Anticlassicisms,’ as a plural, react to the many possible forms of ‘classicisms.’ In the sixteenth century, classicist tendencies range from humanist traditions focusing on Horace and the teachings of rhetoric, via Pietro Bembo’s canonization of a ‘second antiquity’ in the works of the fourteenth-century classics, Petrarch and Boccaccio, to the Aristotelianism of the second half of the century. Correspondingly, the various tendencies to destabilize or to subvert or contradict these manifold and historically dynamic ‘classicisms’ need to be distinguished as so many ‘anticlassicisms’. This volume, after discussing the history and possible implications of the label ‘anticlassicism’ in Renaissance studies, differentiates and analyzes these ‘anticlassicisms.’ It distinguishes the various forms of opposition to ‘classicisms’ as to their scope (on a scale between radical poetological dissension to merely sectorial opposition in a given literary genre) and to their alternative models, be they authors (like Dante) or texts. At the same time, the various chapters specify the degree of difference or erosion inherent in anticlassicist tendencies with respect to their ‘classicist’ counterparts, ranging from implicit ‘system disturbances’ to open, intended antagonism (as in Bernesque poetry), with a view to establishing an overall picture of this field of phenomena for the first time.

Confronting Capitalism

Confronting Capitalism PDF Author: Vivek Chibber
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1839762705
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
A strategic guide to building a more democratic and egalitarian future Why is our society so unequal? Why, despite their small numbers, do the rich dominate policy and politics even in democratic countries? Why is it so difficult for working people to organize around common interests? How do we begin to build a more equal and democratic society? Vivek Chibber provides a clear and accessible map of how capitalism works, how it limits the power of working and oppressed people, and how to overcome those limits. The capitalist economy generates incredible wealth but also injustice. Those who own the factories, hotels, and farms always have an advantage over the people who rely on that ownership class for their livelihoods. This inequality in power and income is reflected in the operation of the state, where capitalists are able to exert their will even under relatively democratic conditions. The most important reason is that states depend on the employment and profits from capitalist enterprise for both finances and legitimacy. Every meaningful victory for working people has been won through collective struggle but collective action is very difficult to coordinate. In the final section of the book, Chibber walks the reader through some of the historical attempts to build socialism and presents a vision of how we might, perhaps against the odds, build a socialist future.

He's last words to her, still echoing in her mind after all these years, "You're a whore, a witch, I never want to lay eyes on you again." Seem like a wound that would never heal. Cremation of the Scarecrow

Cremation of the Scarecrow PDF Author: Dzikamayi Chando
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781914287176
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 108

Book Description
Dzikamayi Chando was born and raised in Gweru, Zimbabwe. Some of his works appear in several online literary publications and Cremation of the Scarecrow is his debut collection. 'Cremation of the Scarecrow is an impressively diverse and generous collection that talks to the truths of blackness, the ghetto experience and plight of poverty, unemployment and drug abuse, dilemma of immigration, identity crisis and discovery of self, depression and death, love and hope, to name but a few. Chando's metaphoric luminosity offers invasively honest perspectives of life as he sees it: "We are lustful angels only here for a one night stand with death, we catch gold fever and comb the dust for death leaping into gloomy mirrors like ghosts muddled by their own darkness." (Gaslighting the Alchemist) Chando's employment of auditory, tactile and visual imagery is second to none. His voice, often ethereal, carries messages transcending lifetimes and realms to deliver powerful instructive memoranda to the unenlightened juvenile and imprudent, the prejudiced gatekeepers, power-hungry fascist dictators and so forth: "This poetry is prophecy of my ancestor's bones falling from his hands like rinsed meteorites spilling out of the nomenclator's mouth his bellow bursting into a trance vibrating in my veins five centuries later... This poetry is DNA- a preserved message on the cusp of a falling sky, a failing realm." (The Reading) Refreshingly, it is Chando's custom to pay homage to women, venerating feminine sacredness, shunning societal norms that disadvantage them, illuminating their mental health challenges and empowering them. In his own words to me, "Women are the grass where two elephants are fighting, victims of their own ignorance in oppressive politics, culture and religion." I find it enchanting that in his poems, Chando often personifies his messages of love and hope as women: "everyone's a poet i'm just the selfish one who took everything from mother's womb these words they bleed to cleanse the place of their origin period" (Womb of the Words) Cremation of the Scarecrow is a honeyed acerbic journey of self-discovery, Chando's overriding missive being, to find your life purpose, you must be able to control the fire.'
