This selection of essays, originally published between 1988 and 2010, demonstrates that in the study of Buddhism a concern with detailed accuracy in philological and textual specifics can be combined with an attempt to deal with wider (and difficult) philosophical and sociological issues. The first part, Pali Literature, deals with the historical formation of the Pali Canon, with the continuing oral aspects of Pali texts, and, looking at the entire range of Pali texts, with the question “What is Literature in Pali?” The second part, The theory and Practice of Not-self, looks at the Buddhist denial of self as both a philosophical position and as a form of practice, one in which a process of self-transformative behavioral and psychological training is seen to culminate in the realization that there is no self underlying the ever-changing moments of experience. The third part, Buddhism and Society, has two essays reflecting on and extending Louis Dumont’s comparative theorizing about the individual and society in East and West, and a final contemporary treatment of Buddhist “nuns” (mae chi) in Thravāda Buddhism, both in general and specifcally as active in higher education in Bangkok. The three essays attempt to build on but go beyond the work of Dumont, and behind him Max Weber, in thinking about what they would call “world-renunciation” as a phenomenon of society and culture.

This book presents a rethink on the significance of Thai Buddhism in an increasingly complex and changing post-modern urban context, especially following the financial crisis of 1997. Defining the cultural nature of Thai ’urbanity’; the implications for local/global flows, interactions and emergent social formations, James Taylor opens up new possibilities in understanding the specificities of everyday urban life as this relates to perceptions, conceptions and lived experiences of religiosity. Cleo Odzer, a young American anthropologist, spent three years studying Bangkok's red-light district, Patpong, an area of a few blocks teeming with bars and explicit sex shows. Patpong is now world-famous for its available and extremely attractive young women and men, who cater mainly to farangs - foreigners, most of them men but some women, who come from Europe, Australia, America, and Japan. Odzer got to know the bar girls, the bar boys, and their varied entourages. She gained their confidence, interviewed them at length, lived among them, and accompanied some of them home to visit their families - whom they often supported - in the isolated countryside, where they were idolized. She also got to know their customers - usually men who had traveled for thousands of miles to immerse themselves in the sensual world of Patpong - some of them falling in love with, even marrying, their newfound Thai companions. At times these liaisons, complicated by language and culture barriers, are truly hilarious, but they can be poignant, touching on the tragic. Odzer herself gained a deeper sympathy for these relationships when she became romantically involved with one of her male subjects. Her affair with him, mirroring the involvements in which many farangs found themselves with the bar girls, imparts to her book a very personal meaning. Her people are not simply dry statistics but real human beings.
