Book Description
At the heart of this anthology lies the world of fashion: a concept that pervades the realm of clothes and dress; appearances and fashionable manners; interior design; ideas and attitudes. Here sixteen papers focus on the Nordic world (Denmark, Norway, Sweden Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Isles and Greenland) within the time frame AD 1500–1850. This was a period of rapid and far-reaching social, political and economic change, from feudal Europe through political revolution, industrialisation, development of international trade, religious upheaval and technological innovation; changes impacting on every aspect of life and reflected in equally rapid and widespread changes in fashion at all levels of society. These papers present a broad image of the theme of fashion as a concept and as an empirical manifestation in the Nordic countries in early modernity, exploring a variety of ways in which that world encountered fashionable impressions in clothing and related aspects of material culture from Europe, the Russian Empire, and far beyond. The chapters range from object-based studies to theory-driven analysis. Elite and sophisticated fashions, the importation of luxuries and fashion garments, christening and bridal wear, silk knitted waistcoats, woollen sweaters and the influence of the whaling trade on women’s clothing are some of the diverse topics considered, as well as religious influences on perceptions of luxury and aspects of the garment trade and merchant inventories.

Book Description
“My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). The modern church is in grave danger. If you pay attention at all, this is easy to see. One of the reasons we are in grave danger is our lack of knowledge. The late Dr. R. C. Sproul once said, “Everyone is a theologian.” The danger here lies in that if we do not have a correct understanding of God and his attributes, we will create an idol of who we would like God to be. Scripture tells us to love God with our whole minds. A study of church history and of theology will help us accomplish this. What you will find within the pages of this study is an emphasis on theology and doctrine as it was forced to become razor sharp due to people making God into the god they idolized. As you proceed through these chapters you will be faced with questions that will help you to learn how to think critically. You will learn many of the attributes of God. You will also learn Christology, soteriology, hermeneutics, apologetics, polemics, and a number of other tools to help guide you into who the biblical God truly is.

The Impact of the Market

The Impact of the Market PDF Author: Jurgen von Hagen
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666750581
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description
Pluralism has become the defining characteristic of modern societies. Individuals with differing values clamor for equality. Organizations and groups assert particular interests. Social movements flourish and fade. Some see in this clash of principles and aims the potential for a more just human community, while others fear the erosion of enduring culture. Yet beneath this welter stand powerful and pervasive institutions, whose distinctive norms profoundly shape our moral commitments and character—notably the family, the market, the media, and systems of law, religion, politics, research, education, health care, and defense. Drawing on scholarship from five continents, many disciplines, and diverse religious perspectives, this series examines the impact of these various institutions on moral education, character, and values. As globalization carries the shifting dynamic between individuals and institutions into every part of the globe, the contributors hope that this conversation will help address the increasing challenges confronting our pluralist societies and our world. In the theoretical, empirical, and historical contributions to this volume, theologians, economists, and market practitioners discuss the many tensions between market economics, ethics, and the Christian religion, thus adding to the fruitful and much needed dialogue between economics and theology. With contributions by Jason Brennan, Michael J. Broyde, Ginny Seung Choi, Samuel Gregg, Peter Lampe, Manfred Lautenschläger, Frank J. Lechner, Klaus Leisinger, Katrin Gülden Le Maire, Piet Naudé, Paul Oslington, Stephen Pickard, William Schweiker, Virgil Henry Storr, Jürgen von Hagen, Michael Welker, Kaja Wieczorek and John Witte. Book Description
At one major publishing house, there is a running joke that the second book published on the Gutenberg press was about the death of the publishing business. While this joke is an obvious exaggeration, there is a certain amount of truth that with each advance in technology, with each printing innovation or invention, a similar death dynamic occurred. This was most noticeable during the tumultuous years of the eighteenth century when a veritable flood of printing techniques, business practices, reading formats, and sources for reading material was introduced. The cultural reaction to each new technological change, while not exactly the same in all respects, exhibited a series of characteristics that closely mirrored each other. In each case, readers reacted in various ways against the innovation and supported the traditional publishing industry and, in their reaction, created, modified, and maintained a sense of their own identity.
